Workers from Huron District Con- tracting have been busy repairing the wing walls and footings for ,the bridge, most recently -completing the footings for the #1 pier on the bridge's south end. The work has been ongoing through the summer and fall, stopping for The Menesetung Bridge Association, the non-profit group responsible for the structure's upkeep, received a Trill= grant to the tune of $50,000 for the work, which is to be.completed by next June. The MBA also received .$20,000 from the Town of Goderich, with additional funds coming from Ashfield-Colborne- Wawanosh Township, the Lions Club, and the Association itself. Me work on the wing walls is pegged at $60,000, according to MBA Trail_ Coordinator Rod LaFontaine. Further reinforcement of the northern pier was also planned, but will have to wait until more funding is made available. Meanwhile, LaFontaine said the Asso- ciation has received many questions from trail users about the extent of storm damage on the Menesetung Trail. Other than a stretch to the south of the bridge, there was little clearing necessary. "We did have a big downfall behind the elevators," LaFontaine said. "Hydro. lines were down, and there were of trees and debris on the trail." The Bridge Association began cleanup shortly after the storm, but when they carne back the next day, they found Public Works had already cleared the section connecting North Harbour Road with West Street. "They came in with hydro crews to repair lines," he said. "They had already cleared it for us." He said the Association gives the town much credit for keeping the trail open, and walkable. Meanwhile, on the other side of the Maitland River, the Bridge Association has another project under- way creating an arboretum near the entrance to Tiger Dunlop's tomb. A $1,000 grant from the TD Canada Trust Friends of the Environment will be used for new trees, in addition to a syca- more donated by the late Dr. Bill Clancy. We've had a lot going on in the last while at our school. We had the Vow of Silence from noon on November 29th until noon on the 30th to raise awareness for children who don't have a voice or the right to speak up for themselves. Advent has begun and we celebrate with a school gather- ing in the gym each Monday to light the Advent candles. On November 29th our senior girls and boys Volleyball teams traveled to St. Anne's to compete against other schools in our zone. The girls placed 3rd while the boys captured the championship title! Way to go, boys! The boys say 'thanks' to Alex Hoy and Scott Gordon - coaches extraordinaire! On December 6, all of our grade 8s will be visiting .St. Anne's for "Experi- ence St. Anne's." Students will get a chance to take a look at what it's like to be a high school student. We have several spirit days lined up for December. On the 7th we have Sport's Jersey Day, on the 14th we have hat day and on the 23rd we have red and green day. We hope everyone has a very safe, happy and holy Christmas - Merry Christmas to all!
