sere was considerable damage to
the mine's loading system, the company
moved in a portable loading conveyor sys-
tem and began shipping salt by Sept. 7. Sev-
eral storage domes on site along the north
pier were also damaged in the tornado but
its major storage facility sustained only
repairable roof damage.
The company is now looking to increase
production to meet salt storage demands
around the Great Lakes basin and will
increase its labour force to keep shipments
moving.
"Today (Friday, Dec. 2) we are recalling
the remaining mine employees who were
on layoff as a result of the tornado, so we
will soon have our full workforce in place,"
Compass minerals Corporate Communica-
tions Manager Kelly Barton said. "However,
we are still working to increase our produc-
tion and in order to do so, we are adding an
additional shift."
The additional shift will work from Tues-
days through Saturdays Barton said, adding
that it will consist of 24 productions miners
and eight certified tradespeople. The com-
pany will be advertising to fill -positions.
The Sifto Salt Mine employs 460 workers
and another 89 people are employed at the
company's evaporator plant on Regent
Street.
