much of the trees and
the lake bluff's, threat-
tabilization. The Town
ch has asked the
Maitland Valley Conservation
Authority to advise staff as to what.
and where replanting needs to be
done along the bluffs.
Steve Jackson, Water Resources
Engineer at the MVCA, said the
first task before any planting can
be done is removing the trees that
are down already. That job, he said,
will have to be done when the
ground is least likely to move.
Its important not to disturb
those banks too much," he said.
"The plan is to remove those plants
in winter when ground is frozen."
The debris along the bluffs com-
pounds the situation by shading
the area, making it difficult for the
sun to evaporate moisture on the
surface and in the soil. Frozen
ground, .Jackson said, is far less
yielding.
However, even before that can
take place, he said a strategy`wi•ll
be developed for planting certain
parts of the bank.: He said a
combination of smaller shrubs and
trees will be necessary to phase in
growth.
Certain species of shrubs and
willows are able to cope well at the
beginning, ultimately leading to a
combination of larger and smaller
species like the slope at Rotary
Cove.
"Smaller species get the roots in
the ground to hold things," he said
"Larger trees are going to pick up
more wind at first."
The Maitland River valley has
also faced a large loss of plant life,
and Jackson said while a similar
approach can be taken, the same
threat of erosion is not there.
Where the lake bank is subject to
precipition on the top and toe ero-
sion from the lake, the river is on a
bedrock bottom, and there is no
evidence of toe erosion from
there.
