There's a growing feeling
within the 811. Board of Man-
agement that 2012 is the year
to "go for broke" budget -wise.
While normally, .the BIA
budget deliberations would
be well underway at this
point, the board will meet for
a dedicatedbudget discus-
sion in early January with all
members of the 2012 board.
"We could spend an hour
talldng about the budget, but
there's not a lot we can do at
this point, Strickland said to
members of the BIA board
Nov.24.
In the wake of the August
storm, both the Town of
Goderich as well as the BIA
have been grappling with
how to approach 2012
budget setting with so many
uncertainties.
"Normally we would set
our budget now, but this is a
strange year; Strickland said.
During the BIA Annual
General Meeting this
month, a formal motion
was made that the BIA will
not increase their levy.
Strickland said he hopes to
ask for "whatever the rate
was per thousand that was
charged to members" last
year, and make it the same
in 2012.
"What 1 want to focus on is
our expense side and start
talking about that and how
much money we want to
allocate to committees and
things of that nature, and my
vision is that atour first
board meeting of 2012 we
strake a draft budget with
our entire new board present
to discuss initives that we
want to do."
1 totally think this is the
year that you put it all in,"
Judy Crawford said. This is
the year that no one is going
to expect budgets to come
out positive, because so
much has to be done and you
have the opportunity to do
your budget as you see fit."
":Go for broke this year

The budget meeting is
scheduled for January 6.

astrous storm in August, the

1 .1. McCabe, Secretary
support to the Goderich BIA.
for work to restore its down-
town business community.
The question brought to the
board table last week by BIA
Chale Mike Strickland was to
add it to the two -to -one
Ontario Disaster Relief Assist-
ance Program pot, which is
not accessible by the BIA, or
to the BIA budget going
forward.
After some discussion, the
board voted in favour of list-
ing the funds in the 2012 BIA
budget for future projects.
Key Item
The "real key item" for the
Business Improvement Are
(BIA) as it heads into 2012 is
attracting new business.
During the November 24
meeting of the executive
board, outgoing BIA Chair
Mike Strickland said the
Incubator Program grants
could be a key mechanism
for the BIA to attract
much-needed merchants
and services it the downtown
erre. Through the use of grant
money, Strickland said new
businesses looking to.start up
can apply for the funding,
and in turn the BIA itself can
then negotiate with
merchants.
"Me idea is in our Strategic
Plan," Strickland said to
board members. "We could
say [to applicants] you must
be open on Sundays, for
example."
He said similar incubator
programs have been success-
ful in places including Brace-
bridge and Gravenhurst.
Master Planning
The BIA is edging for a seat
on the Master Placing com-
mittee for the future of Court-
house Park.
The concern brought to
the table at the Nov 24 meet
was, because the BIA is a
major stakeholder for what
happens in the core, some
members felt the BIA should
have representation on the
committee.
The board voted in favour
of requesting Beautification
Committee Chair Larraine
Baechler be appointed' to the
planning committee for the
Town of Goderich.
