T REO The Canadian Coast Guard rec- ognized four of' its own for out- standing service in extreme. cir- cumstances Monday, November 21, at the Search and Rescue sta- tion in Goderich. The crew of the Cape Discovery - made up of Jana Lorbetski, Brad Kearley, Enda O'Kelly and com- manding officer Jason Johnson - were given distinction awards from Coast Guard Assistant Commis- sioner Wade Spurrell, for their work in rescuing Mike McCarron August 21. The crew responded to a distress call from the lone boater, who was sailing from .Kincardine to Goderich when the August 21 tor- nado swept through the area. According to McCarron: "The weather became very severe quicidy and my rudder broke, and I was being driven into shore... I hit the rocks, spun around and started to be driven back offshore." Meanwhile, at the top of the bluffs, the crew was watching the storm from their hotel room. "When the hall hit the hotel, it was like we were under fire, said Lorbetski. "I said 'Imagine if we got a call now..."' Sure enough, the phone rang. Johnson said it took less than ten minutes to get down to the har- bour, but when they arrived, it wasn't the same place they had left just twenty minutes earliez The harbour was clogged with debris from the Sifto Salt Mine, and power lines lay across the cutter, Cape Discovery. •A call to the command centre later, an auxiliary team was sent from Kincardine. Meanwhile, Lorbetski and Kearly had gotten the smaller Zodiac boat cleared of debris and inspected and were ready to head out. With the harbour dogged with debris, the tugs at McDonald Marina lent a hand and in 10 min- utes, the Zodiac was in Port Albert, where McCarron was stranded. After exchanging Everyone made it safe and sound back to shore, though Lor- betski said they "took a bit of a beating to get out there," in presenting the distinction awards, Spurrell said it was the combination of preparation and execution that exemplified the Coast Guard's motto: Safety first, service ahays. www•chisholmtvecom LG • PANASONIC • PLASMA • LED • LCD • 3D • BLU -RAT • HOME THEATRE • SURROUND SOUND 44 0111 ....a.. • 1 a • • • • • • • A fr\2 V1E)EOMOR 1 — N )1961?
