itiative is part of the program,
Period of PURPLE Crying. Families of
babies born in local hospitals receive a
DVD and booklet about normal infant cry-
ing and the dangers to reacting to the frus-
tration of a crying infant by shaldng.
"All babies go through a normal period
of increased crying in the first few months
of life, says Marilyn King, Public Health
Nurse at the Huron County Health Unit.
"The goal of the PURPLE program is to
help parents and caregivers find ways to
cope with the frustration of caring for a
crying infant so that they never react by
shaking or otherwise harming their
infant."
The Huron County Health Unit is dis-
tributing the homemade purple caps to
local hospitals and hospitals in neighbour-
ing counties who deliver Huron County
babies.
King says the word PURPLE is an acro-
nym which describes to new parents in an
easy to remember way all of the character-
istics of normal infant crying. She says it
also is a reminder -to parents that this.
period of increased crying doesn't go on
forever. "!he letters in PURPLE
stand for:
Peak of crying - The baby
may cry more each week,
peaking at two months, and then
less at three to five months.
Unexpected - The crying
can come and go, with no
explanation.
Resists soothing - The baby
might not stop crying no matter
what you try.
Pain -like face - It may look
like the baby is in pain, even
when they are not.
Long lasting -- The baby might
cry 5 hours per day or more.
Evening - The baby might cry
more in the late afternoon or
evening.

wake of the F3 tornado that hit
• it is estimated that. Goderich
lost close to 460 trees in public spaces, a
number which doesn't include the cem-
etery or Maitland and Millennium trails.
A mature tree suitable for planting may
cost as much as $5,000. To date approxi-
mately $200,000 has been contributed.
With the assistance and suggestions of
friends and the support of the Town of
Goderich, the fundraising initiative "A
Tree Grows in Goderich" was bom. Jerry
Sabin designed the cards, which can be
given as a symbolic gift to represent a
donation made on someone's behalf to
the Town of Goderich's Tree Fund (ReLeaf
Plan) for public. spaces. Friends, family or
loved ones will receive a beautiful card
and the Town of Goderich will receive a
donation for the purchase of trees.
There are two designs one with a holi-
day theme and one with a majestic green
tree, which can be used for holiday or
year-round gift -giving. The cost to
purchase the gift card is $20 and larger
donations can be made purchasing a card
at Town Hall. All money raised will be
donated to the Town of Goderich to use
towards the replacement of trees in the
town's public spaces.
Cards are now available at locations
around the county, including the
Goderich Town Hall (57 West Street),
Goderich Cornrnunity Credit Union, Sco-
tiaBank, Banter. & MacEwan and Finch-
er's (Goderich) as well as at events such
as Breakfast with Santa and Goderich Lit-
tle Theatre's Cinderella. A full list of retail
and event locations can be found by visit-

Tree Grows in Goderich') or by emailing
atreegrowsingoderich@yahoo.ca. Those
wishing a tax receipt must purchase their
cards at Goderich Town Hall.
