Past -President of the
Knights, Leonard Abraham,
said the decision was not
made overnight, noting the'
organization was looking at
any revenue they could get
to help with their $120,000
opetadonal costs.
"We approached the town
to see if we could originally
get a break on taxes," he said.
"The feedback we were get-
ting was because that is more.
through the county than the
town, it wasn't something we
could look at."
The town owns a genera-
tor station directly across
from the Knights hall and in
emergency situations, sup-
plies power to the hall for use
as a command centre.
On the day of the tornado,
a wedding party was cut
short when emergency serv-
ices commandeered the
hall.
The town currently reim-
burses all expenses occurred
at the hall for times of use,
however, the hall requires
staffing and with volunteer
organizations hurting for
numbers, the funds will help
keep the Columbus Centre a
viable option for emergency
services, argued proponents.
If the hall were to close
down, the town would have
no emergency shelter.
"If they were to abandon
it," said Coun. Michele
Hansen. "We have nothing."
In a recorded vote, Coun.
David Yates, Hansen, Dep-
uty -Mayor John Grace and
Mayor Deb Shewfelt passed
the request.
"Anything that we can add
is going to help us," Abraham
said. "It's getting harder and
harder for people to commit
to something,"
He added the Knights
would like to hire a person to
handle bookings at the hall,
and any offset in their
expenses would help.
