With the Walkerton Jail pre- paring to close on December 4th, and no stakeholder con- sultations completed, Thomp- son is concerned the voice of the community is falling on deaf ears. "This community deserves to know exactly why the Walk- erton alkerton jail was ordered for clo- sure, and FSI requests will give us that information, said Thompson. In Thompson's FOI Request, she asked for a copy of the cost benefit analysis documents the Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services used to order the jail for closure. Thompson also asked for pm- jected transportation costs, copies of all documents that 'refer to the Walkerton stakeholder consultations, and analysis documents that show the economic impact this will have on the community. "This is not just an issue of a jail closure, this is a loss of jobs in a rural community that sim- ply cannot afford k anymore," said Thompson. "This has a huge impact on those who serve intermittent sentences, who now have to travel hours to serve their time. The travel costs to transport prisons are going to be huge. This is why I want to see the cost -benefit analysis that proves that this closure will save money for the province When the Ontario Legisla- ture resumes routine proceed- ings on. November 23rd, Thompson will table a motion to ensure that mandatory stakeholder consultations take place before a provincially run institution, like a jail, be ordered for closure. "Listening to the needs and concerns of the community are important: and it appears as though the Liberal government are prepared to forge ahead with this ill-advised plan Godericli gives thumbs -down to planningfee increases Gerard Creces Goderich Signal -Star Goderich Town Council has voted against increasing plan- ning fees. . County. Planner, Monica Walker -Bolton, brought forth the new fees November 15, noting they are designed to reflect the true cost of planning applications, including staff, processing and input costs. The new fees are the end result of a five-year review involving the municipalities of Ashfield-Colborne- Wawanosh, Central Huron, South Huron and Huron East, as well as clerks and treasurers and county planning staff. Many of the fees are increase by as much as 50 per cent, prompting Coun. Michele Hansen to call for a hold on any increase until the eco- nomic situation improves. "We are not in normal cir- cumstances," she said. "Right now we want to encourage development in any way possible" The most substantial increases were in the condo- minium and sub -division fees„ jumping from $4,000 to $6,000, while ,holding zone removal doubled from $250 to $500. Hansen led a motion to delay the fee increases for one year, supported .by Couns. Yates, Morrison and Crawford. The latter called the increases anti -business, saying the rates were exorbitant. However, whilethe town .can decide to freeze its own planning rates, the county can still go ahead ;with their por- tion of the increase. County portions are the lion's share in nearly every category. • Mayor Shewfelt and CAO Larry McCabe cautioned that regardless of who pays for the increases, the rates. reflect the actual cost. If the developer doesn't pay, the municipality will be on the hook. "The taxpayer shouldn't be on the hook for development," Shewfelt said. Walker -Bolton noted that Ituron County's new fees are "a little higher than some," however, In talking to munici- pal staff to Oxford, Perth, Bruce and other counties, found they were also in the process of reviewing their planning rates.
