August 21 tornado.
Signs on the line
The Town of Goderich is waiving their fees
for business' finger signs in the downtown
core. The annual $25 maintenance fee is
being waived for the 2011 year, largely
due to the tornado and the fact that many
businesses are still unopen. The loss to the
town is about $200.

Coun. Kevin Morrison is asking for
continuity in council's summer meeting
schedule.
Council routinely meets only once each in
July and August as many staff take holidays,
however, Morrison notes that special
meetings are often called in the dogs days of
summer. Two regular meetings, he argued,
would cut down on the number of special
meetings required. The motion was defeated.
Giving Space
The Goderich Trees Project is asking for
some online real estate, requesting a link
on the town's web site. The group wants the
link to allow people to donate to the GTP,
whose mandate is to replace trees on private
property.
The request comes as the town is also
soliciting donations for trees on public
property, and Coun. Michele Hansen is
asking for clarification between that public/
private split.
Coun. Jim Donnelly urged council to
"crystallize their position" with regards to
volunteer activity, saying the town should
recognize the volunteers with appreciation
and gratitude. However, he said, the group
needs to make clear ft is not associated
with the town or public property, provide
coffee to OPP and security detail at vari-
ous checkpoints established around
town, delivering urns of coffee on an ATV.
Sandwiches and muffins were provided
to volunteers and the needy at the com-
mand centre.
"So many people in the community
helped in some way," Goulet said.
contact information and accountability for
funds raised and explain they are a non -
incorporated group.
Its very clear they are not a committee,"
said Coun. Judy Crawford. "It is just a
contact where people can get information.
"We would be doing them a service."
Councilor David Yates said he would
support the Zink if the group were to fulfill
Coun. Donnelly's requests.
One call for .all
Finding underground locates is going to
be much easier in Goderich, thanks to the
Ontario One -Call program.
Ontario One -Call provides locate
information for all municipal and commercial
utilities such as hydro, gas, fiber optic, water
and sewer at once, elminating the need
for multiple calls to multiple services and
departments.
James Whittaker of Union Gas pitched the
program to Council last Monday, noting that
excavators can face as many as 13 different
calls when trying to locate underground
infrastructure, The program will cost the
town $1,000 to sign up and the owners
of the individual utilities would pay $1.60
per call. As members in the program grow,
Whittaker said, the costs are reduced. In
Goderich.
lbdge the budget
The 2012 Town of Goderich budget will
likely be put off until the New Year.
Treasurer Judy Kay informed council
that because of the large shifts in property
assessment duet) the tornado, many
variables are still unknown. The budget
is coming together well, Kay noted, but a
completed document will not be available
until all the unknowns are accounted for.
Come January there will be a better idea of
where things sit, she said.
