Drtw one. ontarsoford.ca County communities have room to grow Cheryl Heath OMIT Agency Business development coordinator Doug Barill says there is plenty of room for growth in Huron County. In a multi -pronged report delivered to councillors, Barill spelled out how communities within the county are moving forward with various projects in cooperation with the Huron Economic Development Partnership. Among the report's high- lights were a new media project in Huron East that includes a blog, web show- case and podcast for the busi- ness community,a street scape design project for Blyth in North Huron and the recently completed business retention and expansion project in Central Huron that has already led to the hying of a community improvement consultant for Clinton's down- town core. Barill says businessreten- tion and expansion projects are also under way in the Bluewater communities of Zurich and Hensall as well as the conunu nitres of Wroxeter, Fordwich and Gorrie in How - ick Township. Another major project, says Barill, is the hiring of a down- town revitalization coordina- tor for Godetich. Barin praised the creation of the two year- long positions since dedicat- ing one person to a project allows a lot more to get done than relying on volunteers to take on large-scale projects. Barill adds that once all of the lower tiers' business stud- ies are completed, economic development staff will work together on a countywide one. One plan already in the works, says Barill, is to introduce kiosks to each municipality wherein visitors can access maps that identify all of the given community's tourist spots and businesses. In praising Barill's presen- tation, Coun. Bernie MacLel- lan (Huron East) says it is heartening to see tangible plans are now moving for- ward care of the economic development arm of the county. Coun. Davie Riach (North Huron) asked whether maps could be forwarded to indi- vidual businesses, which Barin notes will be done in the second phase of the project. Consent OK'd The estate of Earl Schilbe will be allowed to separate a 160 -acre farm into two 80 acres thanks to a motion approved by the committee. In presenting the details of the request, county planner Susanna Reid notes the Goderich Township property was once two 80 -acre lots and the: biggest issue involves the Gi i lly Creek that intersects the town properties since it is a habitat for a threatened spe- cies of redside dace, a small fish, which is a concern for. the Ausable Bayfield Conser- vation Authority. Clinton -based lawyer Frank Cameron, acting on behalf of the Schilbe estate, assured councillors there would be no change to the current use of the land and that the change will allow the two lots to be presented totwo family mem- bers. In asking that the county planning department's requests for rezoning not be required, Cameron says extra paperwork would be punitive. Several coundllors, inc tud- ing Jaynes Ginn (Central Huron), supported the request In corgmending the Schilbe family on its maintenance of the lands in questions, Ginn says the reason; why the threatened fish are thriving is because of the Schilbes' care. "There is nothing better to do than give it to the same family looking after it," says Ginn. in approving the request, councilors asked only that the new lot acquire the proper 911 address. MOVING FORWARD A part lot control bylaw for Huron East is a step closer to passage thanks to a motion passed at the Nov 9 commit- tee -of -the -whole session. County planning director Scott Tousaw reports the bylaw, once approved by county coundl, will allow for the creation of Huron East's first-ever town home devel- opment in Brussels. NEW GUIDE Commercial Print Craft, of Woodstock, proved to be the winning bidder for Huron County's 2012 vacation guide at a cost of $33,280. Council- lors learned 5,000 fewer edi- tions will be printed because more travellers are using the online edition.
