rding to Lobb, the
?nt S2 billion registry
includes only half of the esti-
mated 15 million long guns
in Canada.
Some Canadian police
chiefs have spoken in favour
of the registry, saying their
officers consult it before
responding to calls.
Lobb said there are others,
however, that can't rely on
the registry because it's
incomplete.
"Police will always assume
there's more danger than
what's anticipated, which
makes sense," he said.
While he couldn't specu-
late how the abolition of the
registry will affect police day
to day, Huron OPP staff ser-
geant Shawn Johnston said
the force supports legisla-
tion that improves public
and officer safety.
"'Ihe OPP supports having
a complete and accurate
database of both registration
and licensing information
for all firearms," Staff Sgt.
Johnston said. "However,
such a registry is only one
important tool police need
to keep its citizens safe...
Whatever tools we have in
our toolbelt to help us do
that helps us."
The Harper government
plans to increase public
safety instead by investing in
measures that prevent smug-
gled guns from coming into
Canada; working with youth
on crime prevention; invest-
ing more for front-line police
officers; and a focus on vic-
tim services, Lobb said.
"Oftentimes the victim
and victim's family is forgot-
ten" he explained.
Also, Lobb said tax money
spent on the registry will be
redirected to a more efficient
screening process for poten-
tial
oten-tial long -gun owners.
"Hunting groups support
this because they want peo-
ple in the right state of mind
when purchasing a long
gun" he said. "From a public
safety perspective, I think
everybody could support
that"
