would relieve the Kinsmen the
f sponsoring the local band and

Hugh McGregor
gave the band an annual grant. This grant
was discontinued after several years as a
cost-cutting measure. Since that time the
band has received annual financial sup-
port from the. Goderich Lions Club and
Branch 109 of the Legion. The band also
helps itself financially with earnings from
concerts and parades.
The change in sponsorship from the
Kinsmen to the Town of Goderich neces-
sitated a name change and thus the band
organized a 'Name The Band' contest for
the citizens of Goderich. The winning
entry 'The Goderich Laketown Band' was
submitted by the late George Jenner, a
former longtime Goderich. bandsman and
projectionist at the local theatre.
In 1970, on the suggestion of the late
town councillor and former bandsman
Walter Sheardown, the Laketown Band
initiated summer Sunday evening con-
certs in the Lions Harbour Park. The late
town councillor and parks chairman Reg.
Jewell was very supportive of the band in
this endeavour and through his efforts a
make -shift wooden stand was provided as
a bandstand. This stand had been formerly
the deck of the wrestling ring in the old
natural ice arena located at the northwest
corner of West and Waterloo Streets. Band
trombonist Harold Jeffery constructed a
back and roof over the deck. As a result of
the success of the concerts the Goderich
Lions Club very generously replaced the
wooden structure with our present band-
stand that is the envy of many visiting
bands.
it is the desire of the Goderich Laketown
Band to be a "good citizen" of the Town of
Goderich and a "good ambassador" when
performing in other communities.
