The Goderich Communities in Bloom delegation came home from the national convention in Quebec City with more prestigious awards for the town. Martin Quinn, Parks superintendent, Chip Wilson, Works Superintendent, CIB Committee Chair, Barb Allen, and CIB volunteers Doug Bundy and Catherine Quinn made the presentation to Mayor Deb Shewfett at a special council meeting last Wednesday. ith your help we were able to raise 6O8O for the ODERICH &AREA DISASTER RELIEF FUND Dive Sykes Goderich Signal -Star The Town of Goderich won in the Circle of Champions Population small Category of the 2011 national Edition of Communities in Bloom in Que- bec City receiving a 5 Bloom rating and a special mention for Management of the Floral. Program. The town was a winner in the Circle of Champi- ons in the small population category where past winners compete amongst themselves. Goderich also won the Home Hardware Com- munity Involvement Award and special recogni- tion for its Management of the Floral Program. "A favorite among southern Ontario's vacation spots, few others excel in floral displays like the town of Goderich," volunteer judges wrote. "Each year new varieties of plants are integrated into stunning displays. Town staff and community vol- unteers share their knowledge to collectively choose the plants and designs for the annual floral display. The floral displays, are provided, installed and maintained by a harmonious collaboration of all section of the community. Community volun- teers, local businesses and various service clubs take part in the delivery and sponsorship of the displays, helping to keep Goderich "the prettiest town in Canada" Iwy #8 (Wal-Mart Plaza) Goderich, Ont. "Ibis is a tremendous honour for the town and real lift to the volunteers who are part of this, he said. "This award is aboutthe community's service clubs and all the volunteers that give of their time. We submitted a detailed account of the volunteer component and the award covers the broad scope of the volunteer aspect in the community" Communities in bloom awards and recognition goes beyond the flowerbeds and plants carefully grown and tended in the community. The judging looks at tidiness, the environmental aspects, heri tage, urban forestry and, of course, landscaping. and floral displays: "This is a big honour for us and the judging was done three weeks before the tornado of Aug. 21 so we won on our own merit,' he said. "We outline to the Judges all of the work in the community by ser- vice clubs and community groups involved in things like Communitrees project. I'm proud of all the volunteers and community leaders like Barb Allen and Allison Austin." In accepting the award at the Quebec City Allen commented that "Trophy Trumps tornado anytime."
