Goderich and Area Disaster Relief Fund reaches $1.75 million
Donations continue to come in
to the Goderich and Area Disaster
Relief Fund and the total now sits
at $1.75 million.
"We have $1.75 million in the
bank now," Fundraising chairman
Dr. Tom Jasper said. Of course
more money has been pledged
but if we don't have it in hand, it
is not included in the total."
Local groups, businesses organ-
izations.and service clubs have
been generous in hosting events
and fundraising activities and
donations of all sizes have con-
tributed to the impressive total.
Fundraising will continue to
Dec. 1 and the committee
estimates that it will need to raise
$3.5 million in the community
that will translate into $10 million
with double matching provincial
grants. The Ontario Disaster Relief
Assistance Program committee
members estimate that $10 mil-
lion will be required to meet local
needs.
The fund will offer payments to
individuals, renters, businesses
and anyone else who suffered
damage and personal losses in the
Aug. 21 tornado. The fund reim-
burses applicants 90 per cent of
costs not covered by their
insurance.
This week, over 27,000 letters of
appeal for donations to the fund
were stuffed by an army of volun-
teers and mailed out.
