WI members step
p to help out
Tornado victims
Beautiful quilts made for
those who lost their
belongings
Debbie Bauer
Those of you who have read my column
over the past several years will know I don't
live in town and have the option of leaving
Goderich, driving out into the beautiful Huron
County countryside and for a while at least,
forgetting what the residents of Goderich
cannot escape. Each time I come to town days
• or even weeks apart, I am faced again by the
shock of it. Even today, many weeks later, I get
physically nauseous when confronted by the
now scarred and naked parts of our town. I
marvel at how the residents are seemingly
able to cope with the 'new normal'
I can't physically build a new house for
those who need it. I can't even_ come and
clean up the debris many of you have had to,
or continue to deal with. In fact, it has taken
me some weeks to even face the inevitability
of this first written contact. There is a sadness
when 1 think of our beautiful wounded town
that consumes me sometimes, and frankly 1
was afraid to have it in anywayadd to the
despair some of the residens must surely shill
be feeling. But it occurred to me that while
many of us want to help the tornado victims
of Goderich and surrounding area in some
meaningful way, most of us are limited in
what we can realistically accomplish. We had
only to find that one thing most of us can do.
Our Women's Institute Branch of Dungan-
non, with many members living in Goderich,
voted to tie quilts for those who have lost their
homes and or their belongings.
With that goal firmly in mind, I visited
neighbouring Area Institute Conferences and
Rally's to get word out and the WI grapevine
did the rest.
Financial assistance for quilt -backs, bats,
hall rental and the like has been wonderful,
coming from as far away as girneoe and
Renfrew Counties, as has the donations of fab-
ric (bits and bolts). What has been especially
heart-warming however have been the qullt-
tops and even a couple completed quilts, lap -
quilts and even afghans that have come in.
A quilting -bee was planned and accom-
plished for three days this past week at the
Auburn Community Hall. We had a goal of 20
quilts for the marathon and at last count we
had 18 quilts tied and sent out for binding.
As well as our own members of Dungannon
and those &lose to home from Auburn branch
and Beigrave we had members, as well as on
occasion their friends and neighbours too,
from New Dundee, Atwood, Fordwich, Kirk -
ton, Strathroy, Milverton, Paisley, Mitchell,
Monkton, Kinloss, Waterloo, Welesley, Erin,
Bervie and I'm sure 1 have missed many.
We were also extremely pleased to have a
lot of non -institute members bring their
sewing machines as well. They came from
Shepparton, Nile, Lucknow, Whltchurcb,
Brussels and Goderich as well as parts in
between to Join in the fun too.
We had a lot going on and we sure hope
those same women and more can join us for
our next work party. We are scheduled back at
the Auburn Hall through the week of Novem-
ber 20th, until our final nurnber has been
realized.
One of our biggest challenges however is
that of the number as well as names of those
most likely in need of a quilt r would rather
have the same name twice or three times than
to miss anyone.
This quilt in no way replaces what has been
lost. Our only hope is that it offer some com-
fort on a cold night and that for as long as the
quilt might last it reminds everyone that we
do care and it was the one thing we could do.
You can add a name to our list or get on our
'willing to help' list Just give me, (Debbie) a
call at 519-529-7820, email me at wdbauer@

Institute member.
