Ilarbouraires, Goderich's popular
orus, was founded in 1947 by the late
Buchanan. Before going overseas
WWII. Buchanan was the talented

of the first considerations was to
on a name. Since the organizing

meetings were mostly held at Sky Harbour
Airport together with a big percentage of
members being from the Port Town of
Goderich, it seemed .the name Harbouraires.
would be appropriate. Over the years many
valued members have .come from Bayfield,
Clinton, Holmesville and area.
Around 1954 the. Harbouraires Were
invited by the Schneider Orpheus Choir to
join the .amalgamated Male Chorus of
Ontario which isaffiliated with the Amalga-
mated Male Choruses of America. The AMCA
motto is 'Good .Singing, Good Fellowship
and Public Service
The first Big Sing in which they partici-
pated was an international one of 750 voices
held in the Kitchener Auditorium on May 1.8,
1957. That experience resulted in the Har-
bouraires hosting a Big Sing in the spring -of
1958 at the GDCI auditorium.
Over these many years, the Harbouraires
have participated in Big Sings at. London,
Port Huron, Detroit, Hamilton; Brantford,
Niagara Falls, Cambridge -K -W, Massey Hall,
Toronto and the New York World's Fair in
1964. This fine male chorus has also provided
inspirational music and numerous church
anniversaries.
The longevity of the Harbouraires can be
attributed in part to dedicated leadership
and membership. George Buchanan found
and directed the group for 25 years. After his
passing, hewas succeeded by Lorne ;Dot-
terer, Paul Howe andcurrent director, Eliza-
beth Tolchard. Harold Bettger, 98 years of
age, is the only remaining charter member.
Tenor BW (Esquire) Chase as he was referred
to by Buchanan and his brother-in-law tenor
Dave Medley joined the chorus on the same
day in 1948 and remain active memebers.
