211 network, which had been fielding calls
free Project group, was and is a major source
nectivity, Elliott said, adding a request for a
liaison between the town and the group.
Elliott also raised the issue of debris along and in
the Maitland River to council, saying the group is
trying to coordinate a cleanup through Goderich,
Ashfield-Colborne-Wawanosh, Huron County and
the Ministries of Environment and Natural
Resources.
"I hope to spearhead some initiative to clean up
the riverbed; he said.
Elliott noted volunteer labour could be a very
cost-effective way of getting the cleaningdone,
suggesting the town could offer some sort of vol-
unteer: certification to ensure that everyone work-
ing is trained in safety. Furthermore, he said, it
would engagethe community to restore its land
and prepare residents should another disaster ever
strike.
CAO Larry McCabe suggested the town contact
AMEC, the asbestos testing and consulting firm
used for the downtown, to survey the scene, add-
ing the town was advised volunteers were not to be
used for public property cleanups.
The coverage offered under the state of emer-
gency no longer applies to volunteers.
Councilor David Yates asked what the difference
was between Elliott's volunteers and the Maitland
Trail Association. Mayor Shewfelt said the differ-
ence is the MTA is incorporated.
