SOS surveyor Krissy Nickle said volunteers
were busy mapping pieces of wooden ship
hulls that have washed up from what they
expect is the Goderich boneyard.

wooden ship hull washing up on shore," she
said. "We tried to get a few measurements
from every piece, depending on what size
they were. "
On bigger pieces, several hundred meas-
urements are necessary in order to achieve
the group's goal - determining which ships
the wreckage came from.
Nickle said because of the extremely
detailed records documenting the ships -
especially Britain -built ships - the size of the
planks or bolts used can be enough to tell
which ship it came off.
One particular piece of wreckage was
hauled up on the beach four years ago, and
since that time has been covered over in
sand. The SOS crew excavated the piece,
which was more than 25 feet long made of
solid oak with "some really unique metal
features as well."
While the group is technically not allowed
to excavate, they were able to uncover the
piece, as they were not disturbing a pristine
site. Even a piece of waterlogged wood can
tell a story, she said.
"You_can tell where you are on the ship by
what piece it is," she said. "Every little bit
helps in the identlfiication"
Based on their recent findings, SOS plans
to create.a map of the site and individual
drawings of each piece of wreckage. Nickel
said they believe all the pieces are washing
up from the same spot.
One thought, she said, is to move the
pieces back to the boneyard, or use some as
educational resources.
It's an incredible learning experience," she
said. "There is the potential we could do.
something like that."
Nominate a deserving young
person for Ontario award
Jr. Citizens award
recognizes achievement of
youth
Across Ontario, young individuals are tak-
ing control and working hard to make a dif-
ference within their communities and
around the world. The youth of today are our
leaders of tomorrow.
There's one in every crowd and they
deserve to be recognized for their contribu-
tions. Have a look within our community of
Goderich and area and see who stands out
among the rest.
The Ontario community Newspaper Asso-
ciation (OCNA) is currently accepting nomi-
nations for the 2011 Ontario Junior Citizens
of the Year Awards. Help the association of
newspapers by nominating a special indi-
vidual who invests their spare time into
community service, has the courage and
drive to overcome the challenges of living
with :a disability or illness and still dedicates
time and effort towards others.
They can be a 'hero' or someone who
acted quickly and selflessly in a desperate
time to help someone else. Most of all, these
individuals go above and beyond what is
expected of someone their age. They take
initiative to look past their own needs and
inspire those around them to give rather
than take.
Everyone knows someone eho falls under
this category of being a good kid. They are
sons, daughters, nieces, nephews, grand-
children, students, team players and
employees. Let's give these young leaders a
chance to stand in the spotlight.
Readers are invited to nominate someone
between the ages of 6 and 17 today. Afterall,
these individuals are our leaders of tomor-
