On an early morning drive around
the Square, Garlaid saw a crew about
to take down what appeared to be a
healthy tree. He got out of his car,
approached the tree cutters and when
it was clear theyy meant to take it down,
he put himself in between them and
the tone.
Polio• were called and Garland was
charged. however, it was worth it, he
said, as he did not want to watch idly,
as another tree that could be saved
was take_ n down.
Long before the tornado, Garland
has been critical of Gcderich's tree-
cutting practices, specifically around
the lake banks: After the storm, he sees
more stumps than he deems neces-
sary. Around the word UNITE on his
lawn are markers for trees felled at
Harbour Park, at the Marine Museum,
and in. Courthouse Park.
"What nature did not destroy, he
said. 'A very few human beings
decided to, and I witnessed some of
that destruction
Despite the charge, he remains pos-
itive that driving force.; of change for a
reemerging Goderich can only come
when its citizens unite. Until that time,
anything else is premature. If a tree
can stand up to an F3 tornado, he said,
it deserves life and respect.
However, Garland is notthe only
person saddened by the loss of
Goderich's trees.
Sizable donations from Bruce Power
and the City of London exemplify the
loss felt not only in Goderich, but by
those who know it.
On -September 26, council approved
the creation of a tree reserve fund.
Regrowth is coming.
Still, Garland hopes more caution is
shown when replanting than was
shown during the felling.
"We must begin repairing and
regenerating from the damage before
we plant the first new tree, he said.
"And we must determine what trees
we want and do it as a full body of
citizens:
