Difficult experiences
loaded with emotions
When my daughter came.
home from her first day of
high-school, l asked her if the
kids were talking much about
the tornado. She said, "No.
We're done tacking about it
now..." They had been talking
about it to each other in per-
son, on Facebook, and now
were looking for new topics.
Many of us are in the same
boat - we have talked about
the experience enough our
trauma is over. But there are
many people out there who
aren't talking about it --
because their experience is
too much to think about. It's
too terrifying. It's too
emotional. It's just too much
to handle. So what can they
(10?
Shortly after the tornado,;
Eugene Dufour, a trauma spe-
cialist, spoke to us at the
Trauma InformationSessions.
Ile taught user technique to
help with trauma - so that it
doesn't run (or ruin) the rest
of oui lives. And it's all about

diers who had returned home,

about. And for the ones that
had seen their friends killed or
experienced exceptionally
horrific events, they had to do
SOMI l'1-IINt:; to release all of
the thoughts, feelings, and
fears that were trapped inside.
So, he asked them to write
down their experience in as
much detail as possible. It
could take two to five pages
Katrina Bos
depending on their experi._
enty. Then, they were asked to
read their account as often as
possible every day for a week.
When they carne back the
next week, they were asked to
shorten their story in half or to
one or two pages, Similarly,
they now had to read that
story over and over again
every day during the week.
The next week, they would
shorten it to two paragraphs;
Then the following week to a
couple of sentences. And then
down to one word.
does this work?
VVhy
The firstthing that it does
is get "what is inside" "to the
outside". When we have diffi-
cult experiences, they are
heavily loaded with emotions
and feelings: So, nen only do
we have a terrible story
inside, hut each word (if they
story has a painful feeling
attached to it. Siris is why: we
don't want to open that Pan-
dora's Box - why we'd rather
just keep it inside. if we let
that floodgate open,will it.
ever close? Or will we be.
swept away?
But writing the story down
opens the floodgate in a safe
way. We have the chance to
methodically account for
every thought and feeling
leaving nothing out. And
then at some point, there will
be no more to tell - and we'll
stop writing -- the floodgate
will naturally close.
Reading it over and. over
again, allows us to experi-
ence what we went through
in a safe environment -- it
helps us to bring this mem-
ory into our present reality.
In some subtle way, it helps
to blend the two realities
into .something that we can
live with.
Then, as we shorten the
story bit by bit, we get a
sense of power over the
experience. It doesn't own
us anymore; It doesn't sit in
our subconscious and con-
trol us. We now tell and
control the storv. We owls it.
And once it is down to one
word, we know that we can
truly move on.
SU, we can use this for axv
of our experiences with the
tornado But what about
other experiences and trau-
mas in our past that we
haven't been able to come to
grips with? f tow ttla.t1Y things
from our past. are controlling
us today because we haven't
been able to completely heal
from them?
Maybe it's time to start
writing them down in the
same method as above. We
can do it on our own or we
can find a friend, confidante,
or counsellor to help us along
the way.
We CAN heal from this and ,
other past traumas - one
story at a time.

Speed sign reminds motorists to be
vigilant on roads
You may think you're
driving the speed limit, but
a new tool in Huron County
will tell you for sure. The
Coalition for Huron injury
Prevention (CHIP) has
bought a speed sign that
will tell motorists how fast
they are driving. It's part of
the efforts by CHIP to
prompt drivers to slow
down.
In Iluron County his year,
there have been 863 motor
vehicle collisions which
have resulted in 125 per-
sonal injuries and 7 fatali-
ties. Many of these colli-
sions were caused by
aggressive driving, includ-
ing speeding.
The sign was purchased
through a partnership
between CHIP, Huron
County and the Ministry of
Transportation with sup-
port from the Townships of
Iiowick, Ashfield-
Colborne-Wawanosh and
North Huron.
The speed sign will rotate
to speeding hotspots
throughout the county. 'lite
sign will also provide data
to municipalities on traffic
patterns and speeds.
CHIP is a community-
based partnership working
to prevent injuries and
injury -related deaths in
Huron County. They are
