The Premier toured the town the day after the tor- nado and announced the province had stet aside a $5. trillion special fund for Goderich, to be used for cleanup, restoration and get- ting families and businesses back on their feet. Me pledge was made after a special cab- inet meeting, earlier that day. "Carol Mitchell stood here. beside us from the moment she was made aware,," Shew- felt said. "She served meals, she spoke to individuals and she sat in on meetings with the emergency management teams. Carol Mitchell stood with us .while .we worked through the hardest time we've ever had to face in our community," A recent visit to town by provincial finance minister Dwight Duncan confirmed the. $5 million was a down - payment to the town and that further funding could be made available. Shewfelt said he knew that MPP Mitchell went to "a lot of work in securing. the funds and 1 would like to thank Carol per- sonally for her hard work," Funding was needed from the outset to implement the municipal emergency plans and cover expenses of cleanup in Goderich and neigbouring townships. Of the $5 million provincial allo- cation, $2.5 million was required for the cleanup and restoration effort of restore power and gas in the .area. The remaining $2.5 million will be used along with pri- vate donations to help resi- dents, farms and businesses rebuild on top of their insur- ance coverage. The federal government does offer financial assist- ance in these cases, offering aid after the provincial gov- ernment has contributed at least $1 for every resident, meaning $13 million would have to come from the prov- ince before federal funding would kick in. '1 was told that the federal government would only start matching funds at 50 cents on the dollar once the provin- cial contribution had reached $13 million. The only thing the town of .Goderich received thus far is a letter from Prune Minister Stephen Harper, expressing condolences." Candidates prefer face to face time with voters CONTINUED FROM > PAGE 15 It's also the reason Robert- son, the NDP. candidate, con- tinues to run in Huron -Bruce. With an aversion to the "attack- ad attackad politics" and smear he says he's seen in the debates so far, he feels more comfortable campaigning outside Goderich's Sifto plant gate. He spoke with Sifto employees last Thursday as they waited for and exited the shuttle bus that is now transporting there down to the mine. All but one worker accepted his campaign literature, and many approached him to ask where he stands on issues ranging from green energy to government »►rite.. "This is my approach," he said. "I'm not very flowery what you see is what you get. While others "say anything to get votes" Robertson seems to stand firm on policy he believes in. When Bob Hackett, 61, came off his shift around 3 p.m., he told Robertson he's still unde- cided on who he'll vote for. Hackett's concerned about the amount of spending attached to each party's promises. "(Grant) kind of explained that to me.. that the NDP will run a balanced budget," he said as he walked to his car. Main, of the Green Party, made his first trip to Clinton a day earlier. While knocking on doors and introducing him- self, three people refused to take his campaign literature. Main's theory is that voters are either committed to one party or simply don't care. "Eventually you become apathetic because there's so much hype during elections and then nothing changes," he said. "But I think that's some- thing the Green Party is doing well; they're making politics a little more relevant for young people. That's what drew me to the party." Indeed, Main found sup- porters among twentysome- things that day. "I imagine you'll have a checJmnark beside your name,' said Jordan Gibbings, 25. Gibbings said he supports the Green Party's policies and a vote for Main is a "change from the everyday" One man, who didn't want to be named, said he's not Interested in the Green Party - that he's always voted either Conservative or Liberal, He plans to vote Liberal this tithe around because of Mitchell's work in the community since 2003, he said. Both supporters and skep- tics greeted Mitchell at Huron - view last Friday. While Mary Grace Wight- man, 93, shook Mitchell's hand and wished her luck on Oct. 6, Albert Wright ques- tioned Liberal promises on healthcare.
