Can wind business
meet protest
standards
lb the editor:
A "story" in last week's
Clinton paper "Catholic Board
Addresses Wind Project" shows
us the exact problem with
opponents to wind energy. If
you take one little derail and
examine it in isolation you may
feel you have a worthy issue
but if you step back and
observe it in the big picture
you see just how ridiculous it
is.
HEAT mernbers were taking
up time of the Huron Perth
District Catholic School Board
to warn them that during
construction of area turbines
there could be increased
"traffic, dust and noise" in the
area of St. Columban School.
and soccer field. I recall that
just last year we drove many
times through St. Columban to
Stratford as we eagerly awaited
the birth of our youngest son.
For those several months The
whole main street of St.
columban was dug up, rough
and dusty and covered with
targe equipment and even
though this was only meters
from St. Columban School and
the soccer fields -they seem to
have survived!
Now the HPCDSE is being
warned of potential dust and
noise that at worst will be
hundreds of meters from the
aforementioned school and
soccer fields -and for a few
days! No concern from the
HEAT member is expressed
about the hundreds of trucks
carrying untold loads of
potentially hazardous
rnaterials that travel on Hwy 8
right in front of the school and
soccer fields every single day!
Does not the farrns around. ST.
Columban also generate dust.
and noise on a regular basis??
For a group that claims they
are never heard and that this
issue is costing taxpayers too.
much , how is it that they have
their every imaginable concern
printed in this paper and at the
expense of all taxpayers are
taking up the time of local.
councils and now school
boards with everything that
they can twist to suit their
argument. Now on local talk
show is the admission that
every time they have a rally
"because they only expect
peaceful protest" they have
police and undercover police
in attendance -at taxpayers
expense and at the expense of
police man power where it is
actually needed. When I head
to the barn and expect a
peaceful milking time- that is
not when 1 would phone the
police to attend!
The big question remains -
What business do you ever
expect to have inthis area if it
has to meet the standards that
these protesters are demanding
of the wind energy industry
(I'm sorry I realize that they are
not against Wind Energy but
are only "educating" the
public) What potential is there
for people who are in need of
the income from a job when
businesses should not make
dust or noise or have any
adverse affects on anyone in
anyway,the neighbors should
not feel impacted , no product
from the business should be
exported, no equipment for the
business should be imported,
all labor must be local, they
must make hundreds of local
jobs at once not Just a few,
must not be higher than
anyone might feel is too high,
must not use heavy trucks,
must not defend or promote
itself or itis then "biased"
must do years worth of health
studies before they set up shop
even though the same industry
may exist all over the world
AND even though all your
competitors making the same
product do not have to do
those health studies, must not
in any way displace Jobs from
any other industry due to
people -buying their product,
must put up with people
claiming that their product is
10 times more expensive than
the current product when it is
actually 1.7 times more and
fixed at that for 20 years. Must
put up with the so called
"educated" people running
around calling your business "a
billion dollar boondoggle"
because people have to buy all
the product from it and then
claiming that it is so inefficient
and low producing that we will
all get stuck with the cost when
the company sells next to
nothing and goes broke and
must not affect property values
in any way even though the
highest property values come
from those properties that are
covered in trees and have
nothing in sight around them.
The other big question
would be since Tim Hudak and
Lisa Thompson are vowing to.
get future new generation from
gas fired power plants -Where
are they going to build them?
What kind of health studies
will they do ahead of time?
Given the location of local gas
storage facilities I suspect that
those who understand the
need for wind turbines to go
somewhere will also
understand the need for gas
fired power plants to go
somewhere and the current
protestors will have a new arch
enemy who "doesn't listen to
their concerns".
Or to put the question as
plainly as possible for local
councilors - If you had to build
your own exact business, that
you operate today, somewhere -
would you rather try to build it
next to me or next to some of
the wind protesters that you
are trying so hard to represent?
Thank you.

open houses to answer ODRAP questions
pplications are starting
to trickle in to the
oderich and Area Dis-
aster Relief Assistance Program
offices at Goderich Town Hall.
Committee chair, Duncan
Jewel said that while there were
just 18 applications as of two
weeks ago, that number has
grown to 42 as of Friday.
"We've had lots of people call-
ing and talking to our administra-
tors," he said.
There are many questions com-
ing in from the business commu-
nity, he noted, many of whom are
still waiting for their insurance
adjusters. To that end, the com-
mittee will be holding a series of
line
open houses October 11, 12 and
13, in each of the three munici-
palities affected by the tornado:
Goderich, Ashfield-Colborne-
Wawanosh and Central Huron.
"A lot of people still haven't
heard from insurance," Jewell
said. "A lot of people are still wait-
ing on their engineer's report."
That's why, Jewell said, there
will be professionals on hand at
each of the three open houses to
help answer those questions in
order to help people complete.
their application forms. All files
must be started by October 28 at
4 p.m.
On Monday, the GADRAP
Committee brought in a speaker
from the insurance industry for a
public meeting attown hall
including the BIA, Chamber of
Commerce and members of the
downtown and Goderich
community.
The ACW Open House takes
place Tuesday, October 11, at the
Benmiller Forrester Hall from 2-6
p.m.
In Goderich, the open house
takes place Wednesday, October
12 at the Maitland Recreation.
Centre from l l a.m. - 2:30p.m.
and 4-7p.m.
The October 13 meeting takes
place at the Central Huron
Community Complex in Clinton
from 2-6 p.m.
Meanwhile, there is $780,000
in the bank as of this past Friday,
with many donations still coming
in or ongoing such as the united
Way's campaign.
A growing list of fundraisers
arealso popping up in
communities in southwestern
Ontario.
"Phone us." Jewell says to
anyone holding a fundraiser,
"Every night there is a fundraiser
of some description. It's getting
difficult to keep track of them
all.
Campaign kits are being sent
out for corporate donations and
mail -outs will be coming soon for
individuals.
