Of particular importance to the MA membership, said Chair Mike Strickland, is the upcoming Annual General Meeting tentatively scheduled for November 3 at the Liv- ery in Goderich, when "lots of decisions will be made." "We're hopeful there will be a big member turnout," Strickland said to board members. Still in the planning stages, BIA Manager Susan Arm- strong said possible guest speakers could include urban designer and planner George Dark, who has an emotional tie to the Goderich and area community as a cottage owner just north of the community. From a national park in Bar- bados to Toronto's waterfront, Dark, an urban designer and landscape architect, has led a number of complex planning projects, including revitalization and growth management strategies and master plans for campuses, new communities, open space systems and institutions. Dark was a guest speaker for the BIM AMG in 2005, and Armstrong said he has expressed an interest in addressing the Goderich BIA. BIA SUPPORT Goderich BIA Manager Susan Armstrong says their com- munity counterparts from throughout the province are stepping up to offer financial aid following the communi- ty's tragic natural disaster. 'the question now, she said, is how to ensure donations can be earmarked for the use of the Goderich BIA. "There are a lot of BIAs saying they'd like to donate to our board; Armstrong said Sept. 22. "The question is, do they donate to us, or to the [disaster relief] fund?" "We're going to have major funding issues next year," BIA Chair Mike Strickland added, noting the likelihood of "several properties no longer paying into the BIA levy." "We have to be careful. Of all the times we'd need that money, it's going to be next year for sure. We're likely going to be looking at many revitalization and beautification projects." According to member Tom Pincher, there are three options for the BIA in relation to donated funds: Accept the money within the Goderich BIA, or funnel it into either the Ontario Disaster Relief Fund (ODRF) or Edge Fund. A motion was made among members to accept financial donations within the BIA to be earmarked, then left to the discretion of the board to channel into established funds. "What I suggest is that donations come in here [to the BIM so we can keep track of everything before sending it to the ODRF," said BIA board member and Goderich Coun- selor Kevin Morrison. get 11110 goderichsignalstar.com Get all of your news, sports and more.
