The local utility has asked the board to consider approving an increase in distribution rates, effective as early as Oct. 1, 2011 and t remain in effect for up to 63 months. If the application is approved, the monthly bill for a residential customer consuming 800kWh a month would increase by about $5.50 while the bill for a general service customer consum- ing onsum-ing 2,000 kWh and having a monthly demand of less than 50kWh would increase by $12.88. While the utility has applied to the energy board, town Cao Larry McCabe said it was just the first part of a process undertaken by the municipality to recover costs associated with the tornado. "The Ontario energy board allows for increases based on special, circum- stances and since we can't insure for. poles and lines, it's prudent on our part to apply now rir there may not be an opportunity later," he said. It cost the town more than $2 million to clean up and replace hydro poles and lines in town after the storm. Many area utilities helped to restore power in the aftermath, but their man-hour costs and the cost of equipment needed to do the job is considerable. "The board will scrutinize the .appli- cation very carefully and the town will try to pursue other means of funding for the costs, McCabe said. "It's a good idea though, to -get the application process going." The energy board invites submissions from the public on the application either in writing or in person and all let- ters will be placed on the public record.
