There are priorities in
the rebuilding process

pporitunities.
Out of the ashes of the rubble and
despair new possibilities are presented.
There are a number of possibilities and
opportunities before the town, and residents
who took part in a public meeting to look at the
revitalization of the town's green and open
spaces Saturday, were prudent in their message
that the town .bas to take care of first things first
and that a comprehensive and well crafted plan
is a necessary blueprint to work from.
While people have a natural tendency to
want to restore things to natural order quickly,
the process and needs dictate that a certain
order must follow.
People were genuine in their concern for the
immediate restoration of the town's commer-
cial core and residential areas that were heavily
damaged by the tornado.
We need to look after the rebuilding of peo-
ple's lives and their homes and we need to work
towards the restoration of one of the most
unique streetscapes or downtowns in North
America.
People need homes and affordable places to
live. People need to rebuild their business ven-
tures for the viability of the community and the
employment it provides for residents.
The streetscapes and the parks can and will
be developed over time. A calculated and
planned approach can be taken and the areas
around Courthouse Park, The Square, the
waterfront and other open spaces can be
enhanced and revitalized to restore the area's
attraction as a destination.
It's an open canvass and there are so many
possibilities and opportunities to create the
kind of town that can proudly boast of being
The Prettiest'ibwn in Canada.
While the priorities are many, some are more
urgent rgent than others.
Money has and will continue to come into
town.
People from across the province and country
are responding in generous fashion. Each
donation comes with genuine concern for the
well being of the residents and the restoration
of a town the donors have come to know and
love.
But we have reached a difficult and awkward
stage in the recovery process.
It's time to make decisions about what can he
preserved and what must be demolished to
makeway for new development. The decisions
aren't easy or overtly apparent but they can't he
made in isolation.
Information and involvement are the keys to
the town taking advantage of the opportunity
that is before us.
The possibilities are endless. DS

Shine up The Square to full brilliance
Dear Honourable Mayor and Town Council
ofGoderich,
Thank you so much for your diligent work
in our town. We think of you often in this
time of tornado aftermath. Rebuilding is
demanding work; we wish you strength and
support.
As our family resumes a favourite pastime
- doing "ringers" around the Square - it
becomes apparent how much damage has
been sustained. Getting things back to "nor-
mal" will take years, decades.
But please don't be discouraged! Although
we will never look the same, we may yet grow
stronger! The wind has removed some trees
uptown - could this now be a prime location
for a beautiful new play set? An ice rink? A
lunch hour Frisbee field?
Sonne buildings were all but levelled by the
tornado. Might we want to clear some space
for parking, lay more bricks and open the
roundabout to foot traffic? Bring in some
international food vendors' carts, place cafe
seating around an outdoor theatre, offer
more accommodations... redesign our centre
as THE Destination Square?
There's no reason Goderich business own-
ers should feel the need to compete with
super -sized chain stores. We've got a gem of
a spot - an eight -sided diamond, if you wish.
Let's shine it up to full brilliance!!
