What if we could also be "The Most Compassionate Town" in Canada? I was driving to Zehrs a few days ago and as l was waiting to turn left, there was a truck faring me wanting to tum right. I didn't know who was driving. But he seemed frustrated and in .a hurry and I thought to myself, "Oh man, he's going to be faster than me and I'm not going to make it.." And then a new thought crossed my mind. "I wonder if he is one of the people who helped clean up our neighbourhood after the tornado?". And then, "I wonder if he lost his home in the tornado? I won- der if he lost his business or job? Was he traumatized by being in the tornado? Was he related to the man who died?" Then I Just smiled at.him and waved at him to go first. It's a funny thing when we walk around town now. After an entire community experiences a tragedy together, we suddenly have an intimate bond. We all have :some- thing in common to talk about - regardless of our experience or how much or how little we lost. We are suddenly intimately aware of what this person COULD be going through - loss, grief; frus- tration, trauma, fear, uncertainty, etc. We don't know. So we give them benefit of the doubt. We also consider the fact that this person could have been one of the hundreds of strangers who carne onto our properties and moved brush and debris. They could have brought food and drinks. Or maybe they donated or caused funds for the Disaster Relief Fund. Or maybe they helped at the Knights of Columbus. Or maybe their lives weren't directly affected by the tornado or they weren't even here on August 21st. But they are deeply saddened by the loss of others and how their community has been so shaken. Who knows what's going on inside? It would seem that a genuine simile is the least that we'd want to extend to them. Compassion Is sharing feelings with other humans. It's something that bonds us - makes us feel more connected - less alone. We have a phenomenal oppomuuty to make a big change here. We often hear the phrase "We want things back to normal - to the way things were". Well, in this case, lets not go back to our pre -tornado state. Goderich has always been pretty friendly. But the way everyone was instantly friends for the weeks following was. truly heart- warming. Let's keep that going. Let's con- tinue to always give others (stran- gers and loved ones) the benefit of the doubt. Not only could they be going through something tor- nado -related. But there could be countless other stressors and trau- mas in their lives, (God knows that everyone wasgoing through "something" before the tornado struck.) We have a great opportunity hold onto that connection - that compassion -- and that sense of wonderful community. Let's keep it going .
