A number of crew members from the HMCS
Shawinigan and FMCS Summerside, in
Goderich on a promotional tour of Great Lakes
ports, took the opportunity to assist with
cleanup efforts in Goderich last Thursday.
One crew cleaned up the area around the
Cenotaph in Courthouse Park while another,
planted trees at the Sailors Memorial, in Mait-
land Cemetery commemorating the loss of life
during the Great Storm of 1913. Lt. Com-
mander Iain Findlater of HMCS Prevost, Lon-
don helped plant trees at the memorial in prep-
aration for the decoration ceremony Sept. 25.
Lt. Commander Findlater brought 18 London
naval cadets to Goderich to assist with the
cleanup and provide escorts for the tour of the
two ships.
"The devastation is noticeable when you first
come into town," he said. "The damage was
pretty severe and extensive. That's really too
bad"
Many naval cadets from reserve divisions
helped out in Goderich with the cleanup efforts
and also acted as tour guides later in the after-
noon as nearly 1,000 people toured the naval
fps.
Commander Roddick said the crew was anx-
ious to come to port and help with the cleanup
efforts in the wake of the devastating tornado.
