It's a running total, but every dollar
will count.
That was the message delivered in
Goderich by United Way Perth -Huron
Executive Director, Ryan Erb, Mon-
day, September 12. As of Monday's
announcement, the United Way had
raised $85,508 for Goderich - some
thing Erb said they considered imme-
diately 'following the August 21
tornado.
'Obviously we wanted to do some-
thing," he said. "And we do a couple of
things really well
Those United Way strong points, he
said, were raising funds and making
sure they are ethically distributed.
As it is still a running total, Erb said
he could not confirm the money
would be put entirely in the disaster
relief fund yet, however, hedid indi-
cate that was the most likely course of
action. A direct link to the Goderich
and Area Disaster Relief Fund has
been set up on the United Way's main
campaign donation page.
Speaking on behalf of the Ontario
Disaster Relief Assistance Program,
fundraising chair Tom Jasper thanked
the United Way for their support,
noting that while most community
fundraisers can set a figure on a ther-
mometer, the ODRAP committee has
no such goal.
"We can't even begin to estimate,"
he said. "But our timing is very
immediate.
He noted that the committee can
not begin to release money for claims
until their fundraising deadline has
been met.
Mayor Deb Shewfelt added his own
thanks to the United Way as a long-
standing backbone ofthe
community.
"It gives me strength and the com-
munity strength," he said. "That peo-
ple care and are willing to come
forward."
Elaine Osborne, Executive Director
of Big Brother, Big Sisters North
Huron, also stressed the importance
of the day-to-day help the UW gives
through funding agencies like BBBS.
There are 11 displaced families that
BBBS is working hard to bring
together, she said.
The United Way was in town as pan
of their annual tick -Off Bus Tour,
which included stops in eight com-
munities in Huron and Perth coun
ties. By Wednesday the same week,
the United Way's total jumped
another $10.000.
