County eyes
salt storage lots
with Sifto Salt
Cheryl Heath
OMI Agency
The County of Huron is ready to cut a
deal with Sifto Canada Inc. so that it has a
place to store its salt in the months to
come.
At the behest of the company, which is
still grappling to find ways to bestmeet
salt demands following an Aug. 21 F3 tor-
nado that devastated much of its opera-
dons, county public works director Dave
Laurie asked county council to consider
leasing the company what is known as
the Grand Bend patrol yard, though the
site was about to hit the auction block.
While some concern was expressed
about the condemned storage dome on
site, Laurie confirmed the company
would not require that building.
"They really need storage or they will
have to lay miners off," said Coun. Deb
Shewfelt (Goderich), who supported the
request. "It would be good if You can help
them out."
When Laurie noted truck traffic in the
impacted area might be heavier than
usual for the "short term," Donn. Jim Diet-
rich (South Huron) says it is quite likely
the impacted residents will understand
the need.
Fire safety booklets
help families
The Goderich Fire Department is
once again giving local Grade 3 stu-
dents the opportunity to participate in
an educational fire safety program
designed to prevent fire -related injuries
and fatalities. This will be the fifth time
that the Goderich Fire Department has
committed to bringing the safety pro-
gram to area kids.
:Produced by Gateway Community
Safety Net, Fire Safety for Kids is a 116 -
page book that features information on
how to avoid fire, plan an escape route
from your home and .what to do if fire
breaks out. It also offers health and first
aid information, along with important
safety tips for parents, teachers, and
babysitters. Also included is an educa-
tional DVD that features animated char-
acters, interactive games, and quizzes.
It connects to the Community Safety
Net web site, where kids can enter
online contests and win great prizes.
The materials have been provided
thanks to the generous support of local
businesses and organizations. An excel
lent resource for parents, the programs
contain important information .and
websites for More help.
House fires are the third leading
cause of death among children --
mostly as a result of smoke inhalation.
Kids start 30% of these fires. Such sober-
ing statistics illustrate the need for fire
safety education among young people.
