100's of kids before them, there
16 spirited young people stretching
creative wings in Blyth this past

nded in the 1970's, the Young Com -
offers an opportunity for 13 to 19
ids to Lm merle themselves in thee -
four weeks—at no charge—work-

iso gets theatre arts out into the
unity," says the plays talented Co-
or, Rebecca Picheradc. "Kids get to
up with an experience of theatre,
absolutely enriches their lives"
at makes it unique, adds award-
ing playwright and Co-director
Johnson, "is that we very much
on the process and getting to know
oung people, identifying their
ths----it's not so much about the
ct as the process—and that makes
cresting theatre"
c•e the Idds get over self-conscious-.
d forget about trying to look cool
good they just soar:: reports Pickier -
he transition is quite remarkable
and always rewarding for the director."
"Working with them was a daily experi-
ence of discovery," agrees Johnson.
"There was a lot of freedom within the
creativity in the room—I'm able to write
in the moment."..
"'Tire script development evolves as I
work with the kids," she goes on, "so Alli-
gator Tears was shaped collectively and
was definitely an •integrated
collaboration."
The 2011 company put together.a
remake of the last year's musical hit, but
with more singing as part of the produc-
tion, a production that, for the first time,
'vas performed on Blyth's main stage in
early September.
Johnson wrote the lyrics and com-
posed
om-posed the music for the play.
"1: was just dazzled by Brltta and the
music," reports Picheradc. "It was extraor-
dinary—her talent is except oral."
So who, besides the co -directors, was
enjoying all the fun and hard work this
summer? Naomi Allen -Farrell, Beth
Beardsley, Curtis to Brinke, Kelsey Cam-
eron, Emma Dunlop, Reuben Elliot-
Fisher, Rachel Hearn, Stephen Hilde-
brand, Haley Hunt, Marlanya Kolkman,
Gordon Law, Emily McDougall, Courtney

The Young Company Group for 2011 at Blyth Festival Theatre.
Robertson, Amy Thompson, Lisa
Tubb, and Taylor Watson.
Haley Hunt, a five-year veteran
of Blyth's Young Company, says
that it's a great confidence
builder.
"And the dancing and choreog-
raphy was the most fun this yeah'
"Young Company is the best
experience ever," she says
enthusiastically. "I definitely rec-
ommend it."
"Alligator Tears" was based on a
true story set in New Harnburg in
1953; says playwright Johnson.
"The community gains interna-
tional attention as it searches for
identity on the world stage. An
inquisitorial young person return-
ing home and maybe an alligator
were part of the dramatic mix."
The fact that the entire musical
was put together in three weeks
made "Alligator Tears" even more
remarkable.
Johnson's music and lyrics told
the story wonderfully. The well
written script was rife with
humour, pathos, great taglines
and visual gags.
Delivery was spot on, with rapid
fire dialogue and intricate verbal
dances between the characters.
Set and lighting were perfect
and included smooth scene
transitions.
The talented cast performed
admirably -they pulled it offend
did so in grand style.
If you missed the 2011 Young
Company, you missed a 'reptilian
tour de force' --performances that
culminated with standing
ovations.
Mitts Johnson learned through
a childhood friend to make up her
own songs and sing them with
pride.
And by encouraging local young
people to simply be themselves,
she's teaching them to do the
same.
Bravo.
