Canada's prettiest town Dave Sykes Goderich Signal -Star The town and its Municipal and Marine ileritage committee have crafted a compromise in helping peo- ple affected by the recent tornado, rebuild or make repairs within the Her- itage .District, Lawyer Richard Ottewell, who was spearheading a rebuilding advisory committee on a volunteer basis, pre- sented council with a `compromise" of recommendations to assist business people in getting re-established. "The Heritage Act and the Official Plan require information be submitted to council for development or altera- tion; he said. "We don't want the proc- ess to be onerous in time and cost. Rather than a full impact study for dem- olition or repair, we are asking that a snapshot be done with a summary of damages. This motion is a compromise that allows peopleto look at buildings, assess what needs to be done, get a quick architectural review to get things done„ Some repair or rebuilding work may have an impacton adjacent services that would require the town's attention and the streetscape will be top of mind in the redevelopment: The motion calls for an architects's report for listed properties wishing demolition or applying for a demotion permit and an architect's report will be required for any building permit appli- cation for a replacement building within the Heritage District bounded by Nel- son, Elgin, Waterloo and Victoria Streets. The architect's report must contain; photos of the damage; description of the damage; summary of the significance of the building, relation to overall street- scape; cost of repairs; impact on adjoin ing properties. including services; pro- posed natureof repairs or reconstruction and overview of materials that can be reused.
