Shortly after the ships' arrival at 8 a.m., a work party of 40 to 50 crewmem- bers of the HMCS Shawini- gan and Surnmerside will head to'Courthouse Park and help to cleanup any remaining debris, including shattered glass that litters the central park. Much work is still needed to cleanup areas in Maitland Cemetery on High- way 8 where many trees were destroyed. Town Parks Superintendent, Martin Quinn, told council that the gates would open to the cemetery as of Thursday, Sept. 8 and reported that there was minimal damage to tomb- stones in the .cemetery. At the rear of the cemetery, however, about 30 acres of clear-cut was destroyed. One area in particular, the Sailors Memorial, commemorating the loss of life during the Great Storm of 1913 is in bad shape and a work party from the naval vessels will clean up the area, just in time for the Sept. 25 Sail- ors Memorial Decoration ceremony. "This is a great opportunity for the crew to do their part and a great morale booster for our community: Tourism manager bob Marshall said. The ships will arrive Thursday at 8 a.m. and will berth at the South Wall federal dock. The ships will be open for visitors on Thursday from 1 to 5 p.m. the ships will depart harbour at 9 a.m. Friday, Sept. 16. The main purpose of the Great Lakes Deployment (GLD) is to raise aware- ness among Canadians of their Navy as well as to highlight the many career opportunities available in the naval service. The presence of the ships, its offic- ers and crew will serve as an opportu- nity for dialogue with Canadians who are unfamiliar with the Navy and would enjoy a visit to a warship.
