They need assistance in rebuilding their lives. They need assistance in getting repairs done and their homes livable. They need help in finding the right answers so they can get on with rebuilding or repairing. They need help in get- ting money to get started. They need to find the right peo- ple to get thejob done professionally. They need help dealing with the aftermath and what's left of their hopes, dreams, businesses and lives. The restorative and recouperative process can't happen quickly enough. Things do take time and everyone plays a role. Help a friend, help a neighbour, assist your family and loved ones in every way. Help people get information, the critical step in any process. People need to know where they can turn for help and whom they can count on. Right now our thoughts turn to fundraising and helping raise the money needed to rebuild homes and businesses. The Goderich and Area Disaster Relief Committee is up and running and have their administrative office to the public on the top floorofthe old town hall. Application forms for disaster relief are available there, at the town hall, Public Library, Tourism Office, Maitland Recreation Centre and Huron chamber of Commerce on East Street. The form will also be on the municipality's website. For information about disaster relief phone the office at 519-524-4441. It Is important for people to get reimbursed for costs. exceeding their insurance coverage and they should begin collecting the documentation required to file a claim. The deadline for submitting applications is Friday, October 28. The funding for the claims comes from money raised by. the Fundraising Committee which is then matched on a two -to -one basis with money from the province. Claims are paid up to 90 per cent of the eligible amount. All fundraising for disaster relief has to be complete by Oct.; 28 as well so the committee can then disburse funds where needed. Anyone planning a fundraising event or requiring infor- mation is asked to call 519-524-4270. The Disaster Relief Committee has hired two program administrators to meet with claimants, provide assistance in completing applications and administrate the claims review process. The province covers their expenses. Fundraising and getting claims processed is a critical step. The deadline is October 28 for both functions. The claims will be funded by money raised by the com- munity and °the matching dollars will come out $2 mil- lions set aside from the $5 million commitment from the provincial government. There is much to do. We need to repair buildings, down- towns, neighbourhoods and a community. But most of all we need to help rebuild each other and the people that are hurting. TAKE A BREATH FOLKS RFBUIt-DIN C' TAMES some TIME 1 letters to the editor There were many heroes like my father The Heroes of Goderlch To the Editor, I wanted to write and send words of praise and thanks out to the peo- ple of Goderich and the heroes there. I went to Goderich the day after the Tornado hit with a genera- tor for my parents and to help clean up. 1 was lucky enough to be on hol- idays for a week and felt that I had to assist the people in the Prettiest town in Canada. For days my father and 1 lugged trees and logs and help with any- thing we could. I teamed a valuable lesson watching my father during this time. Each day we walked through the town and just stopped and assisted where ever we could. People would thank us for helping and ask who we were. Dad would always just answer, "My name is I)an and this is my Daughter. We just wanted to help". Never once did he give his last name or say any- thing about us. He never wanted to take credit for anything; he was Just doing what he could. We worked from dawn until supper time helping strangers, friends, family and neighbors. After I left he continued to go out and help people up until two days ago when he seen a doctor and found out that he had Bronchitis. He worked until he was too sick to work. This taught me that a person should help whenever they were able. There were people that helped who were only looking for money, fame or recognition. My father didn't ward any of this. He just wanted to help. I know that there were many oth- ers in the community of Goderich that did the same thing my father did. I, like my father do not want fame or recognition for the work we did. That is why I will only give my first name and town I live in. I just want others to read this letter and learn the same lesson I did and to send my appreciation and thanks out to all the real heroes. They are the people that will help Goderich to once again become the prettiest town in Canada. Sincerely Mane B. Stratford LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Signal Star welcomes letters to the editor.
