Birthday gifts help town relief fund
Carston Gardiner will likely
never forget his 12th birthday.
The Goderich resident, the
son of Steve and Laurie Gar-
diner, asked his friends who
were invited to his birthday
celebration to make a $20
donation to the town's tornado
disaster relief fund instead of
purchasing a gift.
So Carston and his buddies,
Neil and Erik Bartz, Mason
Clarke and Hunter McLean, all
contributed $20 to the fund
and made the $100 total dona-
tion to the town's relief effort
at the Goderich Fire Depart-
ment's fundraising initiative
on Victoria Street on Saturday,=
Sept. 3. Carstons' father, .who
suggested the Idea of the dona-
tion, was one of several
Goderich firefighters who were
out on the highway collecting
funds.
"I thought it was a great
idea,' Carston said of his
father's suggestion to make the
donation. The Gardiner home
was damaged in the tornado
and the family will not be back
in their residence for at least
eight or nine weeks.
"What a great story this is,"
Lions Club member Jerry Fel-
ton said of the birthday dona-
tion. The Lions initiated the
Disaster Relief Fund donation
effort with the assistance of the
Goderich Fire Department.
Carston and his buddies still
enjoyed a bowling outing for
his birthday but enjoyed know-
ing they helped out other peo-
ple in their town.
