Ministry provides
funds to digitize
town records
Hie Town of Goderich has
been awarded a grant of $21,278
from the Provincial Ministry of.
Tourism and Culture, Museums
and Technology Fund to digi-
tize and preserve the hand writ-
ten records from its founding in
1827 to 1948.
They cover Council Meetings,
Cemetery Records and By-laws.
Mese records provide an over
the shoulder view of how our
ancestors created and grew our
Town. The funding will be uti-
lized to create digitized copies
so that the general public and
researchers can access the
information while preserving
these priceless records.
"With the recent disaster in
Goderich we've all realized
how important. it is to have
t e•cords of our community's
history forfuture generations
to enjoy. I'm pleased that this
grant will allow the municipal-
ity to digitize its archives and
share themwith the world,"
Carol Mitchell, MPP Huron -
Bruce.
Current technology will uti-
lized to make copies that can be
accessed on the computer des-
ignated to the Heritage Study
that was purposebuilt to allow
the public, researchers and
genealogist access to the past.
The recently updated fully
accessible Town website will
have a. link from the heritage
page to digitized records, that
will be outside the
Town firewall for security, but
accessible from anywhere in
the world.
This will also ensure that the
Town of Goderich is in corn
plince by 2012 with the Minis-
try of Community and Social
Services AOI)A Regulation to
have all information available
in an Accessible format under
the Information and Commu-
nication section of the Inte-
grated Accessibility
Regulation.
Lynda Rotteau the Project.
Manager for the recent Town
Hall renovation said "This news
could not have come ata more
oportune time. When the tor-
nado hit on August 21 the Town
Mall was spared but now the
records in the Archive Room
can be copied and stored off
site forfuture generations."
Hoy, Dunn to lead fundraising effort
The fundraising Initiative to assist the
rebuilding efforts of the tornado -ravaged
town is shifting into high gear.
Tom Jasper, who is vice chair of the Ontario
Disaster Relief Assistance Program is also the
program's fundraising chair. No strangers to
local fundraising efforts, Matt Hoy is desig-
nated as the media contact and Ken Dunn
will assist with fund inquiries.
The community chairs will handle all fund-
raising inquiries and make themselves avail-
able to promote the disaster relief effort.
'Remember the funds we are raising are
matched by the provincial government 2 to
17 Hoy said. "The .funds raised will be desig-
nated to help uninsured residents and busi
nesses and will also assist the Insured who
need topping up "
The fundraising committee will set up in
town hall and a news conference was sched-
uled for Tuesday.
There is a short timeline to the fundraising
effort.
We are here to service all
your needs, including
insurance collision claims,
rust repair and restoration.
