gotten all we could out of the house
and were finally ready to tackle the
trees in the yard. Problem was, like
so many other things, my chainsaw
was in the shed, which was now
underneath my roof, which was
underneath my neighbour's car,
which was underneath... you get the
point.
Just when I was ready to head out
and look for anybody with a
chainsaw, a truck rolls up offering
tree removal service. At the time, I
thought it must have been lleaven
sent.
'there were three guys ‘vorking,
and 1 chipped in too, and in no time
flat, we had six trees on their way to,
the chippers. 1 thanked the guys
with all I could - a cold beer and a
sandwich each.
Looking at how clean the yard
was, I had nothing but great things
to sav about life, love and humanity
'these Samaritans were gone before
I knew it.
Don t ask the why, but when I
came back to the house Thursday, 1
checked the mailbox, which was still
attached to the deck, even though
the deck was now partly in the
kitchen. Force of habit meets force
of nature I guess.
To my absolute disbelief, there
was a bill from the tree removal guys
for $1,500! Well, I wasn't sure if I felt
more angry or naive at having been
taken like that. With so many
volunteers around cutting trees, 1
just assumed they were helping out.
Had I known at the time they were
going to charge me, I would have

just waited and cut it later.
I called the guy and he said he'd
write me a receipt for $2,000 so I
could get more money back from
insurance. How kind of him!
I don't .know about you, but my
insurance doesn't cover tree
removal. in fact, most folks I know
aren't covered for that.
So, here] was, stuck holding a
$1,500 bill I couldn't pay even if I
tried, mainly because the banks are
all closed and my wallet was in the
shed.

And e‘ on if I could, I still
didn't feel right about it, 1 still
believed I'd been taken
advantage of.
So, I figured I'd give as good as
I got.
I borrowed a pen and paper
and made my own list.
'Their bill was $1,500. 'Fhat was
for three guys. I helped, so I
charged them one quarter - $375.
That still left me with a lot of
debt; so 1 got to thinking...
Three cold beers - $200 a piece.
Gas for the generator running
my fridge - $25
Sandwiches - $250 a pop
Well, as you can figure out, it
ended up they owed me some
money. I felt a little bad at that,
so I decided to throw in a free
piece of advice:
Get the hell out of my town
and don't EVER come back.
We'll see if their accounting
department can process that one.
