Salvation Army asks large
donations be arranged in advance_

Goderich Signal -Star
lt's been hard to keep up.
l'hat's a familiar thought to
nearly all members of the com-
munity in the livake of the most
devastating storm the'province
has seen in 15 years. Salvation
Army Family Services Coordi-
nator Shannon Daniels says she
can see the confusion and
exhaustion in the faces of nearly
everyone who filtered in and
out of the Knights of Columbus
Hall last week.
"It's been hard for everybody.
I've barely slept," she said
Wednesday.
Working out of the hall since
last Sunday's tornado, Daniels
has been helping coordinate the
Salvation Army's meal service
for community residents, along
with trying to organile the many
donations that tine being
dropped off at.the site.
"People are wanting to help
out, which is great;" she said
pointing outthe piles of sup-
plies, clothing and toys that line
the hall's inner perimeter..
‘‘ hat 1 would ask right nom, is
for anyone who is wanting to
organize a large scale donation
to check in with me first so that
we can prepare for it."
The Salvation Army hit the
ground running following the
community disaster. From the K
of C, they're serving three meals
a day and helping to accept and
distribute donations. From the
Salvation Army Citadel on Sun-
-coast Drive, Family Services has
been meetingwith victims to
provide emergency services,
including lodging and financial
needs.
Daniels said members of the
church have established sec-
ondary sites in Goderich and
surrounding areas to store the
mounting volumes of dona-
tions, and hasasked that any-
one who has executed or organ-
ized a Dirge -scale donation
drive to to contact the church to
arrange for item 13 k -up or drop
off:
"What we don't want is large
scaledonations to be dropped
off without warning," she said.
"We don't have anywhere to put
it herr, so like to tri' to
coordinate in advance. (loth-
ing,_toys, household items,
those are going to he good for
the long terns, but for right now,
we need the small things."
Those little things are in hot
demand: Individually wrapped
snacks and beverages, cling and
tin foil, even acetaminophen
tablets and both adult and child
diapers are in constant use.
They can be dropped off at
both the K of (. and Salvation
Army locations in Goderich, as
well as Clinton.
Another way to help out in
the short term is by purchasing
a grocery gift card. `The organi-
zation has partnered with the
Zehrs Foodmarket on Highway
.8 in Goderich, where gift cards
purchased by customers for the
Salvation Army are being col-
lected on site. When supplies
are needed, the Sally Ann can.
simply make use of those gift
car -ds as a funding base.
If you would like to coordi-
nate a large donation, please
leave.a message at -the Salvation
Army Citadel at 519-524-8822.
