We have a Courthouse
Square, which is the heart of
our town. We have pretty
parks, manicured gardens
and quant shops that keep
quirky hours and leave post it
troths 00 they doors to say
"We've ruin to the bank, be
back soori" lVe know all the
shopkeepers' names and all
the town gossip. Saturdays
are fcir going to the farmers
market on the square, and
Sundays are great for the flea
market. Hiu1 scldv nights in
the summei %yt'rt' lot going to
the (handstand, pulling up a
hewn chair and listening to a
hand. Canada Day, everyone
comes tip and surrounds the
sctiare for the Canada Day
parade which looks remarka-
bly like the winter parade
spinus Santa and the frigid
temperatures. The people
that own and work in the
shops become Like family
oriel' you live here a while..A
friendly hello while you do
your shopping usually turns
into a ten minute conversa-
tion where you discuss the
weather, the events, your life
and your family. Working in
advertising has given me
even more of a chance to get
to know these wonderful peo-
ple. Sweets & Memories is
run by a woman named Lynn.
She makes the best home-
made gelato. She lost her hus-
band to cancer a few years
ago., and has a few grown
children who miss their dad.
Carolyn owns Cravings, and
has all the best flavors of ice
cream. tier business is always
busy in the summer. So busy
in fact that her back is sore
from scooping ice cream
(though you wouldn't know it
.from her cheery hello and the
smile on her face), and sadly

is selling the business. 1\ oof
.N Stuff just opened it's doors
at the beginning of the stljn
nmei; as did Homescapes, Sea-
shells and Tummies "Toddlers
& "t yens. ()ur downtown was
evet changing, growing and
welcoming n ew and eager
business owners, and 1 would
get to meet with these won-
derful people and hear their
excitement and nervousness
about their new ventures. 1
wish I could tell you about all
the people who live and work
on the square, so you would
know that these are real peo-
ple with real families. That
these were people with hopes
and dreams and ambitions. i
could tell you about lazy Sun-
days with my husband James
and my daughter .Abigail,
when we would wander onto
the Square to grab fries and
sausage on a bun at Dirks fry
wagon and then find a shady
spot under a tree. to eat and
talk about the week past, Or
1 could tell you how we have
a chili cook off and we all
freeze outside while the town
comes out to judge our chili,
and how my husband has
come in first and second two
years in a row. So many mem-
ories, so many stories 1 am
one of 5000 people, who
could tell you about our
pretty little town.
August 21, 2011, Disaster
strikes. We walk out our door,
and into a scene out of some
movie, except it's not a movie.
Sirens are wailing, gas leaks
are hissing, glass is breaking,
people are yelling, and no
one is quite sure what has
happened. No one has time
to figure out what has hap-
pened, but only time to think
about what to do to make
sure. everyone is safe. Our
town looks like a bomb has
gone off. Later we would find
out that it was a tornado. We
don't have a pretty town any-
rnore....or so'I thought at the
time.
August 22, 2011. Some-
thing happens. Something
amazing happens. Goderich
residents pullthemselves out
of their homes, dust them-
selves off, take a deep breath
and say, "Where do we start?
Who do 1 help? What can 1
do?"
We have no hesitation, no
expectations, but only a
desire to pick up the pieces,
We wander down streets with
chainsaws and gas cans. We
find a house that k buried
under trees and just start cut-
ting awry. 1 have heard
numerous stories of people
saying that. they have no idea
who the people were at their
house that cut down the trees,
removed the ruble and swept
up the dust...but you can find
them nextdoor digging out
their neighbor. We walk the
streets with sandwiches, hot
dogs, water and fruit, trying
to feed the workers who oth-
erwise wouldn't stop to take a
break. We open our doors to
stn -angers, offering up what
food, clothing and beds we
have. We tirelessly and self-
lessly work until we fall over
exhausted, just to help our
neighbors in need.
"This town has rallied
together without being
instructed to do so, and with-
out .a moment's hesitation.
My town is the Prettiest Little
Town in Canada because of
its people. not because .of it's
trees or flowers parks or
beach. The people in this
town have shown their true
colours and should be com-
mended for their
selflessness.
So when you` see my town
on the news and see the
houses ripped apart, trees
mangled and ruble strewn
across the streets, please see
the beauty in the picture. See
the men and women in the
background working from
sun up to sun down BEING,
not MAKING our beautiful
town:
