The resilience of the people of.
the people of Goderich is truly
rernarkable.
Scores of residents filled the ice
surface the Memorial Arena Satur-
day, August 27, to talk about what
happened, next steps, and how to
begin the healing process.
"It's very clear to: me," said
Mayor Deb Shewfelt to thunder-
ous applause. "We're not victims.
We are survivors."
A moment of silence was then
held for Norm Laberge, who
remarkably and tragically was the
only life lost to the Aug. 22 tor-
nado. Shewfelt .offered his thanks
to all the first responders, volun-
teers and municipalities for help-
ing the town on the road to recov-
ery, reading an excerpt of a letter
from Governor General David
Johnson.
"We will recover. We will restore
the Square" Shewfelt read. "And
I'll add this: This is a new begin-
ning. Good luck and God bless."
The town has been in a state of
emergency for one week now, and
Steve Beattie from Emergency
Management Ontario noted
Goderich has always been a leader
when it comes to having plans in
place.
