is created for a cash of
banners that will likely hit the posts
along the outer perimeter of Court-
house Park next spring. This newest
batch of banners is part of the BIAs
Festival of Banners project that has
been in the works for three years.
Dubbed the Historic Downtown
series, the six-foot banners will fea-
ture "symbols of our community,"
Baechler said. Those symbols
include landmarks, such as the
lighthouse, museum, Town Hall and
salt mine, peppered with "what the
community has to offer," including
the water park, beaches, Livery the-
atre nature trails and annual
festivals.
"They're very showy with lots of
colour," Baechler told fellow BIA
board members. Eighteen of the 20
designs will replace the smaller red
banners thathave been a fixture on
The Square for. almost 10 years. The
BIA hopes to arrange for the per-
manent banner installation in con-
junction with the Goderich Public
Works department by spring of
2012.

This new batch of banners will
join the gateway series debuted by
the BIA in 2010. That installment
endeavored to sprinkle the two key
gateways into the downtown core,
at Kingston and Hamilton Streets,
with bright, bold and informative
banners to help draw and direct
traffic to Goderich's downtown.
The 56 32' by 72' banners were cre-
ated to cover 28 downtown lamp-
posts The size and colours
designed with the help of local art-
ist Gwen Kiar and focus on BIA
initiatives, such as the weekend
Farmer's and Flea Markets, as well
as downtown shopping and dining
locations, The project was halted
last year after inadequate hardware
fixtures proved to be little match
for sweeping windsduring more
severe weather. Baechler says she.
has been working carefully with the
town and iron crafter Jim Wallace
to ensure a designed -to -fit batch of
hardware will hold steady. The sea-
sonal gateway series is expected to
return to The Square in the spring:
