"They're going from two .Kinder-

Nicholson said.
St. Mary's is the only Catholic
school in: the county undergoing
construction in regards to Kinder-
garten, she said. According to
Ministry guidelines, classes can he as
large as 26 students.
Superintendent of Education,
Joann MacGregor said .while the
classes at St. Mary's are currently
under that number, they are filling
up.
"My gut feeling is tells me we'll be
filling out at least three full classes,"
she said. "It's an exciting time. It's
good for families and good for kids."
Two schools in the H-HPCDSR, St.
Ambrose in Stratford and St. Joseph
in Clinton, were selected to herald
the new full-day program last year
and MacGregor said the results were
better than expected.

Full-day Kindergarten will be
rolled out over five years in Ontario.
MacGregor said current Senior Kin-
dergarten students are well-prepared
to enter Grade 1, adding it will be
interesting to see how the first full-
daygroup adapts as well.
Over at the Goderich Municipal
Child Care Center, work is nearing
completion on a new toddler room
as well, for children age 18 months to
two and a half years.
The gymnasium has been reno-
vated to include a classroom and one
of the existing rooms has been
turned into a toddler room. Director
Laurie Thomson said the work has
been ongoing all summer, but should
be opened up by September 6.
"We had a waiting list and so that's
why we decided to do that" she said.
"It changes just about daily"
Funding is being supplied 100 per
cent from Huron County for renova-
tions•and there are still spaces
available for toddlers if parents want
to register.
Family literacy activities as
easy as A -B
September is all about
back -to -school time to get
back into routines, make
lunches and go to bed early.
And since there's so much to
do and kids are still in sum-
mer mode, it's hard to make
sure the family is focusing on
learning.
Learning together as a fam-
ily is vital to a child's future
education. Doing family liter-
acy activities not only helps
develop children's reading,
writing and math skills, it also
provides an opportunity for
parents to learn something
new too! Children raised in
literate households are likely
to enter grade one with sev-
eral thousand hours of one-
to-one pre -reading experi-
ence behind them.
Learning happens in many
ways, especially in our day-to-
day activities. In honour of

buy.
2. At the store, ask your child
to count out the money to
make the purchase.
3. Make it a habit to always
read a story together at
bedtime.
4. When cooking dinner,
involve your children in
measuring the ingredients.
This helps them under-
stand fractions and
measurements.

opportunity to, practice literacy. Read
signs, billboards and licence plates
together, and show your children the
proper way to read a map.
While on the Internet, make time to
research something new that your
family is interested in. Researching
skills .are important and help with
reading and comprehension.
In the car, sing along to songs on the
radio. Singing encourages learning
patterns of words, rhymes and
rhythms, and is strongly connected to
languageskills.
8. When playing a board game, read the
instructions aloud to each other or
count how many spaces to travel
around the board.
9. Involve your kids when you pay bills.
This will teach them strong financial
skills early on in life.
10. Children follow by example, so
ensure reading is part of your daily
life too.
