project began as a solution to the
rong wait list for affordable housing
on County - of which Goderich had
}ngest. Members of Goderich's
Salvation Army and Bethel Pentecostal
churches formed the idea and the initial
demolition work began inside the building
in 2009. Largely a volunteer effort, the
building itself was secured through federal
and provincial funding.
According to the county's April 21 min-
utes of last year, "The County agreed to
support the project due to the lack of social
housing in Goderich. Unfortunately the

project is not moving forward now
as there Is a large amount of money
needed to complete it."
Before the county would
approve an •initial $410,000 in
affordable housing projects, one
in Goderich, one In Clinton, they
wanted the province to come up
with $1 million.
Work began on the project,
and 12 units were created inside
the former nursing home - six
one -bedroom, two two-bedroom
and four three-bedroom. Much
of the work was done by volun-
teers from faith groups in
Goderich, keeping costs low and
workflow steady.: However, there
have been a few challenges arise
along the way.
Last summer, Huron County
Councilors approved $200,000,
after problems with the roof and
plumbing were' discovered. At
the time, County CAO Larry
Adams asked whether it would
be the last time the county was
asked to put in more funding.
It turned out It wasn't.
This February, the province
gave an additional $350,000 for
the project, with the provision
the county match the amount
and take on a managerial role. As
a result, a board of directors was
created, with two Maple Tree
Housing Board members and
three county council members.
Goderich Deputy Mayor John
Grace is the Chair of the man-
agement committee, and said as
it stands, there is still not enough
money to complete the project.
We still have a shortfall, he
said. "We're not going to go 100
per cent (on construction) until
we are sure we have all the mon-
ies needed for completion."
Goderich's waiting list for
affordable housing continues to
grow in the meantime. Waits,
Grace said, are up to six years.
There is no need greater than
it is today," he said.
Tenders are out for the remain-
der of the work, and Huron
County Housing Services Man-
ager Barbara Hall said they have
"started a process to determine
the final cost for the project,"
Final dollar amounts can't be
released until after the tenders
are received, Grace said, how-
ever, he did note that work is
about half done and completing
the heating and cooling are part
of the remaining work.
Of note, however, is that part
of the original agreement will gee
two apartments set aside for vic-
tims of domestic violence and
three for those needing support-
ive mental health assistance.
"That was part of the original
agreement," Hall said. "'Those were
the focus groups that were part of
the affordable housing program."
Grace estimated the remaining
work would take about four
months to complete once fund-
ing is secured.
