Gas was shut off to the municipality shordy after
the storm to prevent any threat of explosions. There
was a major break in the gas, line and the odour of
gas was evident in most areas around town.. The
Square and adjacent blocks were evacuated for the
protection of residents.

There was extensive damage to the Sifto Salt mine at the waterfront
and the Evaporator Plant on the East side of town as evidenced by the
photo. The West Street area was hit particularly hard by the tornado as
shown in the top photo. Damage to Victoria Street United Church was
extensive and the roof was torn off the structure. The entire block of
West Street off The Square was heavily damaged. Vehicles and tree
limbs clutter and block streets everywhere in town.
