g fungicide is not only hard
t in the air, it is also against
e ban we don't have very
arsenal to take care of it:
However there is a simple home rem-
edy that is working very well on young
trees. A mixture of baking soda, water
and dish soap works to change the pH
balance on the leaves, making it hard
for the fungus to grow.
Quinn said tar spot has been around
for a while, however it Is growing more
prevalent with each humid summer.
"That's why we don't plant any more
of those varieties (of trees)," he said.
"We only plant native varieties...
maples, oaks and a few species like
that."
Native species such as sugar or silver
maple are unaffected.
Flowering crab trees - planted for
years beneath hydro lines because of
their smaller height are also prone to
black spots. Quinn said the more resist-
ant Ivory Silk lilac trees are .low being
planted instead.
Larger Norwegian Maple trees have
dense canopies, and Parks staff have
been thinning them out, generally in
spring and fall. More air flowing
through the tree helps control the
spread of the disease.
Meanwhile, the Emerald Ash Borer is
starting to spread as well. If anyone has
noticed trees wrapped in plastic, Quinn
explained that. is actually a trap, check-
ing for the spread of the borer.

Lednor Clan celebrates
Over the July 29 to August 1 weekend more than 50 family members (including Isobel Gutcher, the only
remaining Lednor girl) celebrated their long-standing family heritage in "The Port" by taking in many of the
wonderful events celebrating Port Albert's 175th Anniversary. The family, now spread from Blind River, to
Hamilton, Toronto, Brampton and beyond, enjoy their cottages situated on the family homestead along the
banks of Lake Huron between Ashfield and Victoria Streets. They remember with fond memories Jean and
Henry Lednor and the many familymembersgone on before. Submitted by Karen Hutchinson (daughter of
Bill Balkwill and Margaret Lednor Balkwill).
