Morning creeps over the treetops as hundreds of people
from all walks of life gather on the lake shore. They all eye
a single buoy, marking their turn around point in the
water.
An airhorn sounds and for the next thirty seconds a
mass migration takes place as the crowd rushes into the
frothing water:
A proud sporting tradition reaches a milestone this
year.
The Goderich Triathlon turns 20 this Sunday,
August 14.
Therace, which sees competitors swim one kilometer,
bike 42.5 km and run 10km, brings hundreds of athletes to

Race Director Tom Doherty has
been putting on the event for two
decades now, and shows no sign of
stopping any time soon.
Ai
It is really geared with the
idea of putting the racer
in mind — how can we put
on a quality race and give
people a value for their
money."
— Race Director Tom Doherty
"I guess I never really thought that
when 1 started it would last this long,"
he said. "But I'rn still having fun, 1 still
like doing it and presumably with help
from the high school this can go on for
a while:"
The annual competition is a fund-
raiser for Goderich District Collegiate
Institute and to date, the Triathlon has
raised more than $54,000 for the
school.
Being the 20th year, Doherty said
the prizes have been up, as well as the
overall sponsorship for the race.
sponsorship for the race.
Registration is as strong as ever,
though Doherty noted, nearly half of
all registrants do so on race day.
"That's how it's worked out the last
20 years," he said. Registration takes
place Saturday between5-7p.m. at the
Main Beach and Sunday morning
between 6:30 and 8:30 a.m. •
Generally there are about 85 solo
competitors and 25 relay teams.
A racer himself Doherty said the
whole race has been put together for
competitors. •
"It is really geared with the idea of
putting the racer in mind how can
we put on a quality race and .give
people a value for their money," he
said. "It was for the school and for the
racers and that's what I've always tried
to hold it to. People say it's old school
but if it works why change it."
Course records are held by
Sudbury's Mike Hay (1:58.26 in 2007)
and Louise Powell of Brampton (2:10.5
in 1997). Most' of the online registrants
are from farther away, and Doherty
notes rnany are from the Kitchener
and London areas. Many cottagers
also come to take .part in the race.
Only a handful are from Goderich.
"We always attract a couple really
good athletes, a lot of first timers and
out-of-towners who like the small
town feel," he said.
Registration fees are $40 for singles
and $80 for relay. teams:
