He said five people from Stratford deserve to be recognized for contribut- ing - Philip Fowler, Bill Shivas, Glenn i iisiop, Jackie Hayton and Jean Thomp- son even though none had a connec- tion to Lizars. Three others related to the Lizars family also chipped in: Tattle Fellowes and Daphne Davidson from Goderich and June Evans from Owen Sound. "If h weren't for these people it never would have been done, Cunningham said of the group of eight. Stratford Memorials did the repair for $500, which Cunningham said was a good price. The pieces of the broken cross were bonded together over the winter. The cross was reattached late lastmonth and the gravestone was power -washed. Cunningham said he is looking for- ward to seeing the marker on a future visit to Stratford now that the work is complete. He first drew attention to the .bro- ken gravestone a year ago in`a story in The Beacon Herald. Previously, Cunningham success- fully lobbied Huron County council to repair the Tiger Dunlop Tomb in Goderich: His interest in the Huron Tract pio- neer led him to research other promi- nent families who settled the area. The Dunlops and Lizarses were among the so-called "Colborne clique" of families who wielded influ- ence and power in the.area. Lizars, whose father Henry was the Justice of the peace in Goderich, set- tled in Stratford and was a Crown attorney before becoming the third judge to serve the county. He died in 1894. Home St. in Stratford is named after Lizars' mother Peggy, whose maiden name was Home. Two of Lizars' children, sisters Robina and Kathleen, wrote a book chronicling the social history of the area, "In the Days of the Canada Com- pany'; in 1896.
