It's that same community involve-
ment that turned Baren's head too.
"There is a feeling that people love
the place," he said. "There is some-
thing very desirable here.
"I'm delighted to be back."
Baren noted the Maitland Cemetery
trail, plantings on the Square and the
"attractive shops" as highlights of the
trip.
Being in the Circle of Champions
means Goderich is by default held to
a higher standard. Lewis said local
conditions, such as Goderich's hot,
dry summer, are always taken 'into
effect on the score sheet:
"We're used to judging," he said.
"We always take those things into
account."
"We were up in a different area last
week where they had hail the size of
tennis balls 10 days before," noted
Karen. "The community is the iceberg
and the flowers are just the tip"
Both judges made special mention of
Shelley Peet, who maintains the 56 down-
town planters. They were also impressed
with the residential streets, and the obvi-
ous pride that people take in their blooms
and properties in general.
"They put the effort into it," Baren
said. "And it all turned out quite
well."

Meanwhile, the list of local garden-
ers vying for the Curb Appeal Contest
have been narrowed to the top three.
For this contest, the town Is divided
into five areas, and five teams of
judges each take one area and select a
top three.
A final, sixth panel selects the top
three overall In residential and com-
mercial categories.
This year, members of the Ontario
Parks Association toured the short list
nominees and came up with the
winners.
