This began when we learned that only 2% of the clients requiring our help have a carbon monoxide detector in their home. We all know there is no second chance with carbon monoxide poisoning. Together, we can save lives. The Society of St. Vincent de Paul supports needy families and individuals within our community every day with services offered. In 2010, well over.1600 individuals received help through .our various supports, some of which include the food bank, essential medi- cal and dental, emergency utility & rent assists and many more services. We serve people of all denominations. People find themselves requiring our help due to a vari- etyof reasons including job loss, low wages, 8 8 illness, etc. While all of us are susceptible to difficult times, those who are already strug- gling are at a far greater risk. With the generous support of people like you, we are able to help many of these fami- lies and individuals, not only to meet essen- tial daily needs, but also, through community support they can feel the promise of a brighter future for themselves. Please consider how you would like to sup- port this important event. We would appreciate donations of carbon monoxide detectors, money to purchase them, food items for the BBQ, you could donate another item(s) to offer for door prize(s) or something four the silent auction - the possibilities are endless! And of course, your (business) name will be included on our "Donor Appreciation Board". Charitable receipts are available. It`s a win -win-win situation for all! Thank you for your commitment to helping us meet such an important need in our community. Respectfully, Pat Clifford, President Mary Barry, Family Services Coastal. Centre asks are we loving our Lakeshore to death? (GSS Aug 3) Dear Editor: RE: Coastal Centre asks are we loving our iakesbore to death? (GSS Aug 3) You must be kidding. The short answer is yes -- Goderich's biggest offender being the salt nine expansion plans. "A favourite pastime is to enjoy awe- some sunsets amidst a unique natural environment, says the article. All true, but how awesome will it be with 15 acres of industrial buildings, barns, silos, etc (if 1 read the article correctly) in front of it, not withstanding the current telephone book cover imagining it has sent a strong message for tourist attraction. Really. 1 can't imagine hearing anyone planning their vacation, seeing the phone book cover 'ad' of a sunset behind the salt mine and saying, "Let's visit Goderich and see the sunset behind the salt mine for our few days of holidays." The article admits how special our lake shore and view are. But then it goes on to say, "Some activities we do and where we do them can do lasting damage to.the very place we enjoy." No fooling. Has the Coastal Centre not read the paper to know what the giant American owned company plans to do to the "awesome sunsets and the "very place we enjoy?" Then the article mentions the "risk of habitat loss because... the expanding population and the wide range of activi- ties that accompany them. Really? Like a salt mune expansion of 15 acres of inning the lake right out to the old fog horn, tip of the north breakwall; for those old enough'to know this Landmark. I should think that will displace a lot of the aquatic fowl life whose habitat has been the breakwall for decades. Then MP Lobb informed us that it's against the law (read illegal) for the Feds to fund any "infilling of lakes"(GSS July 27). But after it's done they can fund other operations built upon the infilling. Amazing. Finally the article says we should "learn(ing) what we can do to heal dam- aged areas." Halt the salt mine's disgrace- ful expansion plan is where we should start.
