That sain Yifns-o -local
community support and
resolve by our recently re-
elected Conservative MP,
Ben Lobb sent a clear mes-
sage to voters last May.
Lobb and the Conservative
Party of Canada ran on a
clear plank to abolish the
long -gun registry, resulting
in a solid mandate for Lobb.
The voters spoke loud and
clear.
"The Federal long -gun reg-
istry will
eg-istry.will go down in history
as one of the biggest boon-
doggles EVER," said M.P.
Lobb
Doing what they prom-
ised. thefederal government
is poised to make scrapping
the registry pri(tity number
one when they. get hack to
work in the fall.
We learned list week that
when that happens Quebec
is prepared logo it alone and
create its own provincial gun
registry.
Governmentreaction to
that news was as expected.
Spokesperson for Public
Safety Minister Vic 'I'o ews,
Michael Patton told QMI's
Jessica- Murphy that
pje inces are free tai set up
eit own guy registries if
they wished.
l iowever, the federal gov-
ernment will not help Que-
bec by propping up the mon-
ey -sucking program.
Nor will they contribute
data already collected by the
Canadian Firearms Program
withthe province.
Quebec will have to essen-
tially start from scratch.
"Were been clear that our
governtnent would rather
see the money saved from
the registry go to areas
including crime prevention,
tougher sentencing and sup-
port for victims," added
Lobb.
Quebec's provincial gov-
ernment isn't the only prov-
ince thinking ahead to
develop its own firearms reg-
istry program.
•Ontario's.McGuinty gov-
ernment is also making
noises about having some-
thing up their sleeve,
Ontario Attorney General
Chris Bentley told Murphy
the government is looking at
options of its own.
Given that Ontario is head-
ing into a provincial election
in October it definitely gives
the long -gun registry provin-
cial profile.
If voters and taxpayers of
Huron -Bruce spoke clearly
on this issue federally, com-
mon sense suggests that
they're likely to send the idea
of a McGuinty managed
long -gun registry packing
too.
Now that Ontario's Attor-
ney General has let the cat
out of the .bag, it now
becomes the responsibility
of voters to ask some tough
questions of Huron -Bruce
incumbent Liberal candidate
Carol Mitchell.
Law abiding long -gun
owners, hunters and all tax-
payers would be eager to
know the specifics of
Ontario's long -gun plan.
How many millions is it
going to cost us at a time
when the money might be
better spent elsewhere, like
paying down Ontario's debt?
More importantly, will
folks in Huron -Bruce trust
the move by the province to
manage its own registry pro-
gram given the recent pro
vincial government initia-
tives that ended up costing
taxpayers way more than
intended?
In Huron -Bruce would this
he yet another issue, like so
many others of late, geared
to appease voters in larger
urban centres instead of
proving that the McGuinty
government really under-
stands rural Ontarians?
We've heard Dalton
McGuinty talk many tunes
about the importance of
honesty and transparency. .
If that's still the case he is
obligated to include his par-
ty's plans for a provincial
long -gun front and centre in
their campaign platform.
Sooner rather than later
would give our constituents
time to digest the specifics
and hold our Huron -Bruce
Liberal incumbent to
account on this issue.
With the federal govern-
ment .slated to be back to
work on September 19, and
the _Ontario election sched-
uled for. October 6, Dalton
McGuinty an d C a ro l Mitchell
have more than enough time
to fill voters and taxpayers of
Huron -Bruce in on their gun
registry plans before we head
to the polls.
Three new projects planned to protect waterqualfty at Lake Huron
A new partnership has been announced between Conser-
vation Authorities, health units, and the Counties of Lamb -
ton, Huron and Bruce that will support three new projects
around Lake Huron.
The projects include the Huron County Clean Water
Project, which provides up to 50 per cern funding to owners
of farms and rural properties to build livestock fences and
plant trees along waterways, and properly decommission old
manure storages and abandoned wells.. The Garvey/Glenn

Watershed Project, which will increase water storage capac-
ity and control erosion that adds sediment to the water in the
Maitland Valley, while a water management strategy is in
development for the Main Bayfield. River watershed.
According to Huron -Bruce MPP Carol Mitchell, the prov-
ince is making investments to protect and conserve water
while building a strong, sustainable future for agri-food.
industries and rural communities.
"Ontario farmers have always been excellent stewards of
the land. This investment will help our farmers and our com-
munities continue to protect Lake Huron and: our surround-
ing water resources to keep them clean and pmtect them for
generations to come, Mitchell said July 22.
A total of $150,000 is being invested in these projects as
part of Ontario's commitment to improving water quality in
all the (treat Lakes.
*The province's funding is a welcome addition to Huron
County's Clean Water Project, which funds water quality
improvement projects such as erosion control, tree planting,
and watercourse protection. The County's program has con-
sistently resulted in a 3 -fold investment in the community for
every dollar of water protection funding, so this money not
only benefits the environment, it also stimulates the local
economy," added Huron County Warden Neil Vincent.
