ed in .January of this year, the.
u program has been growing
thin the society. It's mission is
rntnunity volunteers with
sufferers for a little one-on-
ach week, offering a chance
cialize as well as provide a
pite for caregivers. So far, pro-
inator K'ir-sten Passchier says
ve has been met with a good
success. -
w we have 15 volunteers and
nine of those have been matched with a
person with dementia, she said.
Though there are a number of Alzhe-
imer Society clients on the list for the
program and even more have expressed
an interest in signing up, Passchier said
more volunteers are needed, specifically
within the Goderich area, to make effec-
tive geographical matches.
"We are always looking for volunteers
from throughout the county, but right
now we only have one volunteer frorn
Goderich" she said. "More from the area
would be fantastic."
The Just For You: Volunteer Compan-
ion Program is a visiting program for
individuals with Alzheimer's disease or
related dementia. Volunteer compan-
ions are match with a person with the
disease and vis4 once a week during
their preferred time to provide soclaliza-
tion and meaningful activity to the indi-
vidual. These visits give the caregiver
opportunity for respite and assist them
in keeping their loved one at home
longer.
'It's a different type of volunteering,"
Passchier added. "Some of it entails sim-
ply having coffee with someone once a
week. I know another volunteer who
takes their match out for a walk, one has
been out to visit a farm ... So far the feed-
back from both sides indicates [the pro-
gram] has been going really well for
everyone."
New volunteer recruits are offered
free comprehensive education and
training in communication techniques
as well as background knowledge of
Alzheimer's disease and dementia.
Passchier said the Alzheimer Society of
Huron County assists caregivers, clients
and volunteers throughout all aspects of
the program:
"We are available at any time for ques-
tions or assistance and will maintain
contact with the volunteer and family to
ensure the visits are beneficial," she said.
"We also develop a visiting schedule
that doesn't interfere with other respon-
sibilities and will work with the family
and volunteer to develop an•activity
plan"
If you are interested in becoming a
volunteer companion or are a family
member and would .like more informa-
tion about the program contact the
Alzheimer: Society at 519-482-1482 or
email Passchier at klrsten@alzheimer-
huron.on.ca. Interested volunteers can.
also submit the online application form
found at www.alzheimerhuron.on.ca
located on the `Volunteer Opportuni-
ties' page.
While most program participants
have been Alzheimer Society clients,
Passchier added that families not
already associated with the society can
sign up for the program.

survey county residents
Huron County Social Services wants to know what you
know about their services.
A short survey on the county's web site is asking resi-
dents a number of questions about their familiarity with
their programs and services.
"We are making an effort to integrate our services and
make them more user-friendly, says Dave Overboe, Direc-
tor of Social Services. 'Our staff decided this survey would
assist in future planning."
The survey isn't just for people who have used their
programs and services, but for all residents of the county.
The surveywill be available on the Huron Countyweb
site, www.huroncounty.ca, from August 1 to 21. All answers
are anonymous and confidential.
Paper copies of the survey are also available at Huron
County Social Services located in the Jacob Memorial
Building, 77722D London Road, South of Clinton.
The survey takes about five minutes to complete and you
can enter your naive separately in a draw to win one of two
$25 fuel gift certificates.
