Though there are a number of Alzhe- imer Society clients on the list for the program and even more have expressed an interest in signing up, Passchier said more volunteers are needed, specifically within the Goderich area, to make effec- tive geographical matches. "We are always looking for volunteers from throughout the county, but right now we only have one volunteer frorn Goderich" she said. "More from the area would be fantastic." The Just For You: Volunteer Compan- ion Program is a visiting program for individuals with Alzheimer's disease or related dementia. Volunteer compan- ions are match with a person with the disease and vis4 once a week during their preferred time to provide soclaliza- tion and meaningful activity to the indi- vidual. These visits give the caregiver opportunity for respite and assist them in keeping their loved one at home longer. 'It's a different type of volunteering," Passchier added. "Some of it entails sim- ply having coffee with someone once a week. I know another volunteer who takes their match out for a walk, one has been out to visit a farm ... So far the feed- back from both sides indicates [the pro- gram] has been going really well for everyone." New volunteer recruits are offered free comprehensive education and training in communication techniques as well as background knowledge of Alzheimer's disease and dementia. Passchier said the Alzheimer Society of Huron County assists caregivers, clients and volunteers throughout all aspects of the program: "We are available at any time for ques- tions or assistance and will maintain contact with the volunteer and family to ensure the visits are beneficial," she said. "We also develop a visiting schedule that doesn't interfere with other respon- sibilities and will work with the family and volunteer to develop an•activity plan" If you are interested in becoming a volunteer companion or are a family member and would .like more informa- tion about the program contact the Alzheimer: Society at 519-482-1482 or email Passchier at klrsten@alzheimer- huron.on.ca. A short survey on the county's web site is asking resi- dents a number of questions about their familiarity with their programs and services. "We are making an effort to integrate our services and make them more user-friendly, says Dave Overboe, Direc- tor of Social Services. 'Our staff decided this survey would assist in future planning." The survey isn't just for people who have used their programs and services, but for all residents of the county. The surveywill be available on the Huron Countyweb site, www.huroncounty.ca, from August 1 to 21. All answers are anonymous and confidential. Paper copies of the survey are also available at Huron County Social Services located in the Jacob Memorial Building, 77722D London Road, South of Clinton. The survey takes about five minutes to complete and you can enter your naive separately in a draw to win one of two $25 fuel gift certificates.
